SD recommendation for my sister

My sister has asked me to recommend a knife to her for SD purposes. I told her that I recommend Emerson Knives. She laughed and said "of course, but which one?"

So, esteemed members of this forum, I bring forward the following question:

Which Emerson should I recommend to her for SD, and which Emerson for EDC, or is there one that you believe can do both for her?

If you have any questions that may be relevant, do ask.

I'd think either the Gentleman Jim or the A-100 or possibly the Combat Karambit. Which ever she's more comfortable with.

For general-purpose EDC (and this is an unpopular choice for that category, I'm sure) I love the CQC-7.

The A-100 is cool, but no wave :(

Of course, if you can find one, you might consider the Commander...

Final choice? The Horseman!

I would say the 'Gentleman Jim' first and the A-100 second. Either one will have an intimidation factor, but employing the wave on the GJ even scares me.;)

Maybe a La Griffe? Considering the appalling lack of pockets on most women's clothing, it might be easier to carry.

Well, since SD is the staple here, you have to consider the ergos related to the action. I love the hell out of my CQC7, but unless you're holding in an icepick grip, you can also run the risk of your hand running up the blade. Though someone who is comfortable with a knife will slash X's most of the time, a major impulse is to stab. The two most common knife attacks recorded are the stab and the downward slash.

That considered, I would want something sized for smaller hands, and with a decent choil. The thing I love about Emersons, is that they can all stand up to EDC. The only question is whether or not they 'appear' to be an EDC blade. Ha ha.

If I were aiming for a SD blade, my personal choices for your sister (especially with a little training) would be the:

Mini CQC 15 (SFS will nail the EDC portion)
or hold out for the Mini Roadhouse

I also like the PSARK, but its EDC use is somewhat limited. Just my 2-cents :)

Training is just as important as the knife selected. Without it, nothing will help when things go from good to nightmare in seconds. I'd select the CQC8 Horseman?

Just a FYI. The pockets are women's pants are ridiculously small. My sister carries a CQC-7, but can't do it with every pair of pants. She actually wishes she bought the Mini CQC-7. My wife couldn't fit the Traveler in most of her pants simply because of the thickness.

Another alternative to think about is the Spyderco Delica Wave.

I did see this really hot Specwar custom with Black with pink skulls at a show that was raffled off. I think the proceeds was going to a good cause but wow would that have turned heads! Good luck trying to track that one down =)

We'll be trialling a Horseman this week. There are definitely few good pockets on women's clothing. Once we have some data points, we'll see where we're at. Do continue to comment, as we're looking at all ideas.

I would go with the horseman. The cqc 8 was designed for combat and the horseman has a manageable size. 3.5 in is large enough to be intimidating but small enough to be socially acceptable at the mall.

Mini A100 or A100. They have plenty of grip for crying out loud. People stab each other with screwdrivers and ice picks with plastic or duct taped handles, but somehow in the hands of a knife collector gripguard-textured G10 becomes too risky without a guard or something. That's just sad.

So much for the important of guards. As for size, I carry the A100 quite a lot and see no reason why I'd need a knife this big to cut a hole in a crowd of idiots who have decided I need a group hug. So I vote she gets the Mini A100. With the right training she'll pretty much use it as a lever and not as a whirling dervish slicing machine, so it's more important that it's something she actually carries, uses for cutting tasks, and can defend in court. Yeah she's a girl and that makes it easier on her than on us boys, but court defense is still another battle she'll have to fight.

I'm probably going to switch to a Mini A100 myself once I manage to find one for a decent price. I just cannot fathom a situation in which a 3" blade is unacceptably short for self defense. What, the attacker is crazy or on drugs or is a Scientologist? Golly, it's a good thing I have my 3.6" blade!

So much for the importance of size.
