SDFK vs HDFK

Hey everyone! Just was a little curious here. I have seen both the HDFK and SDFK and I do love both of them. I have been wondering though, which of the two is everyone’s favorite, and why? Also what makes one better than the other in certain scenarios because from what I’ve seen, other than a few tweaks both of them seem the same in a lot of ways.

There is nothing one can do that the other cannot.
The SDFK was the more recent offering and, I would guess, there are more SDFK’s than HDFK’s out there in the wild.
I own both. Actually, all three. There is a basic SDFK and a signature SDFK (SSDFK).
If I were somebody new to CPK and was going to hunt one down I would be looking for a signature SDFK.
Any of them are going to be really pricey on the secondary market.
The best money spent would be to wait for CPK to run one of them again and buy that direct from CPK.
All of them are extremely robust and make for a great all around camp knife.
I really couldn’t say one is better than the other.

I personally like the looks of the HDFK better but would be happy with either

Yes! HDFK looks awesome with the fuller (blood grooviness) while the SDFK looks more bland imo. Here are the specs. Added edit: --> HDFK also has a useable finger choil which is a big plus for me!

HDFK 6.5" .22" 12.8oz 11.825" OAL
SDFK 7.0" .25" 14.8oz 12.25" OAL signature
SDFK 7.0" .25" 17.0oz 12.25" OAL basic

Based on looks, my lizard brain would go for an HDFK, but the secondary market is expensive. Given that the SDFK is slated for mass production in 2026, my practical side would (and is) waiting for that, which should be easily obtainable from CPK directly. I'm hoping they offer a version with the fuller! I will go for the Signature version since I prefer something a bit lighter, albeit more expensive than the basic.

The signature SDFK feels like a different knife than the basic SDFK

You like a "dress-knife"? Go for the HDFK; pricewise, too, although the SSDFK is getting there.

It's actually outstanding in that kind of role.

One of my favorite combos...

I've mentioned this before. For me, the SDFK is a bit of an enigma. It's a big ass knife. However, in your pack, and in terms of real estate and weight, it doesn't feel that way. It's a knife that will decently cut food, but you can still pound it through a 5" log. Weird.

This link should get you to my impressions. Although, the comparison was between a HDFK and a Signature Series SDFK. The Signature version is lighter, has a swedge, and feels much more balanced in multiple grips to me.

A standard SDFK is a fine CPK but the Signature version gives the HDFK a run for its money in all categories other than aesthetics, IMO. It’s pointier as well, which lends it to being a little more offensive.

Like Ferider posted earlier, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Both knives are phenomenal examples of how versatile a knife in that size range can be.

Good luck on your hunt and the adventure you plan on bringing one of these excellent blades on. All the best.

Great write up!

I have to admit, for some reason, the HDFK didn’t quite entrance me, the way the MC did (my Goldilocks pick for ONE CPK, especially for the backwoods/boonies).

I wound up passing the HDFK on to someone else to appreciate.

Then I got an SSDFK, and that one stayed.

My 3 CPKs to pick from for backwoods use are the MC, SSDFK, and FK2, depending on what capabilities I need.
