SDFK vs HDFK

I love them both so if you have the means and the patience, shoot for the stars and get them both, then decide for yourself.

I have a soft spot for my HDFK. It was my first CPK and one of the first things I recall doing with it was slicing tomatoes at a BBQ. It drew a lot of impressed commentary. That said, the SSDFK is an extraordinary camp knife itself.

This is purely subjective but if I were to plan on just taking a single knife, I'd lean towards the HDFK. It feels a bit lighter and balanced and feels suited to a myriad of tasks, short of heavy chopping. If I was taking a small knife in addition to something with a bit "extra", the SSDFK would be my go-to. Again, all largely based on subjective perceptions and it should be assumed I am going with other tools regardless of knife pick.

(Old pic from back when the SSDFK was still kind of shiny and new.)

Had all three at one point and favor the hdfk as well. Didn't care for the heft of the sdfk and how it felt in hand so parted ways with it to a forum friend. Still have the sig and really like how it feels in hand. Love the weight reduction from the standard and the jimping on the thumb ramp but for some reason I can't warm up to the swedge.

If there were a swedgeless signature, I think that would be a contender to knock the hd off the top spot.

Excellent photo.

This link should get you to my impressions. Although, the comparison was between a HDFK and a Signature Series SDFK. The Signature version is lighter, has a swedge, and feels much more balanced in multiple grips to me.

A standard SDFK is a fine CPK but the Signature version gives the HDFK a run for its money in all categories other than aesthetics, IMO. It’s pointier as well, which lends it to being a little more offensive.

Like Ferider posted earlier, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Both knives are phenomenal examples of how versatile a knife in that size range can be.

Good luck on your hunt and the adventure you plan on bringing one of these excellent blades on. All the best.

Interesting! I have 2 HDFK. One in 3v. The other in "Nathan D2". I had no idea that the standard Duty field knife was a longer blade, and a thinker steel. Somehow I completely Miss that. I absolutely love my two but I do not have any of the standard duties which actually are a heavier knife. That is fascinating.

That’s why they’re actually called ‘Super’ Duty Field Knives 😉
