hello all

i've been looking for a knife recently, but i've had no luck finding it. if i recall correctly, it was billed (by U.S. Cavalry) as being the SEAL team knife about 7 years ago. this (i believe) would have been before SOG won the contract. it reminded me of the camillus USAF survival knife, only it seemed like it could handle a bit more abuse(my USAF finally broke on me). does anyone have any idea what knife i'm talking about and, if so, where i might be able to find one? thanks for all the help!

glad to know that there are other people who enjoy knives out there

used to always sort of wonder why no one had a web-board like this going. . .

The knife you are referring to is the MKIII, made by Ontario, and a piece of crap

. It is modeled after the AKM bayonet.

thanks for the speedy replies!

not2sharp, that is not the one i was thinking of, so perhaps i was wrong about it being called a SEAL knife.

Clayton Hufford, do you, by chance, have a link to a picture so i could see if that's the knife that i'm thinking about? is there anything in particular that makes it a piece of crap?

basically, i'd like to replace my little USAF guy with something a little stronger/tougher. it had a good run and stood up to some hard use, but it was rather at the mercy of the sea and had a few other minor shortcomings that i was under the impression the other knife could make up for. i've found the Ka-bar USMC fighter to be rather handy for most things, but it, again, has troubles with the ocean. any other suggestions are welcome

(while it may not be quite a 'money is no object' situation, i can afford to spend a few bills as buying even one knife every 5 years isn't that hard on the old bank account

, so even if your suggestion seems expensive, please offer it anyway)

thanks again!

BTW, If you want a really though knife at a reasonable price then check out the Busse line. 1SKS (see store on the upper right hand corner of your screen carries the Basic Series knives)

Charlie,
if it doesn't have to be stainless, try
http://www.newt.livesay.com and check out both the ICU and the AirAssault models. Very tough knives at very reasonable prices (ICU - $100, AA - $125). 1095 steel, excellent heat treat, good designs, and made for abuse.

Stainless? I don't have any stainless fixed blade belt knives...sorry...

I think the knife you are thinking of was the one made by Phrobis. The blade was made in Spain and doesn't seem to have been strong enough for underwater use. It didn't last long as a issue item. I'm not sure at this point what the USN model number was on the knife.

thanks again everyone!

not2sharp, that is not the knife i was thinking of, but i do remember that one from those old catalogues also. i wish i could describe it better, but all i can remember is that it reminded me of the USAF survival knife, only it looked like it had been preped for aqueous enviroments(wasn't that cooler sounding than water?).

thanks for the suggestions all. along those lines, what about the knife that replaced the one i'm trying to think of, i think it was a sog (or maybe it was a timberline). is it worth it?

thanks again!

just gave a look at the ones you suggested not2 and they look great, so i'll keep those in mind. the main drawback is that the other knife had various little 'tools' built into it which i find amazingly helpful while hiking and camping.

I checked "Special Warfare, Special Weapons, The Arms and Equipment of the UDT and SEALs". The knife I was mentioned was called the Phrobis CUK (Combat Utility Knife)

It was never the official knife of the SEALS, but the US Calvary catalog stated that the Timberline SpecWar was tested and favored by many of the SEAL Team members.

Perhaps you could do with a multi-tool and a fixed blade!

A SOG SEAL Pup and a multi-tool would give you plenty of tools and a fixed blade ready for the sea.

Charlie;
I have a Mission Knife and Tools titanium MPK that is one of the original government issue knives to the SEAL teams. Mine is a sterile model and according to Mission Knives it is a collectors item valued at some where around $2000. However, they still make the knife as the MPK with their logo on the blade for around $350 I think.
These knives are tougher then a sumbitch and WILL NOT tarnish or rust. They also will not harden to a breaking point in extremly cold weather.
If you have the $$$'s and want a knife that at one time was a SEAL team issue then I don't think you will be disappointed with the MPK.

i think i should note that i wasn't particularly looking for a "SEAL knife", just that the knife i had in mind was one and that it seemed the knives that followed it were all high quality knives that would handle most anything well.

thanks again for the suggestions, it's nice to have so many options! what are people's thoughts on mad dog knives(particularly the ceramic ones)? it's a bit more than i'd planned to spend, but if it will last, i think i could afford it. mostly, has anyone used one as their rather all-purpose knife?

If you want "high quality knives that can handle most anything well", I have to also say take a look at the Busse Line. Check out this thread for some pics. http://www.bladeforums.com/ubb/Forum39/HTML/001285.html Maybe the Natural Outlaw or a Badger Attack, Badger is the 3rd one from the top(with lanyard) in the photo and there is one for sale in the individual forums for a great price.

I have a Lainheart model SEAL knife for a while, but swopped it with NEMO. Perhaps that is the blade? It was about 5" made from ATS-34. Nice knife.

I was told that most SEAL use whatever works and is not over the top if lost or bust. The prime suggestion was the KA BAR knife in 12c27? Stainless steel.

Otherwise they went for a Mad Dog knife.

Well that's what was said...

REAL SEAL KNIFE

http://www.halliganknives.com/gallery15.html

I spent the weekend with Greg Jones. He has been a SEAL for 12 years. The link is for a knife that that Ed Halligan (of KISS fame) made for him. It is a true SEAL knife. (Ask an active SEAL what they think of the "real seal knives"... and then ask them what they carry....!)

That halligan sure is nice, but most seals use what they were assigned, same as other SF groups. All of the knives branded as seal knives were probably carried by one seal somewere at least once. The most well known knives I know of that were branded seal knives were as follows:

Timberline Specwar--Supposedly cost more to make than it sold for and was tough as nails.

Buckmaster-Hefty chunk of steel.

SOG--Seal 2000, nice knife

MD--ATAK--Great design and good edge retention

Mission MPK--Al Titanium

And probably a ton more that were given to them as test beds. I'm sure they had customs from well known makers such as Carson, and others.

I would not worry so much about seal type knives, but instead what purpose you need it for. There are many great knives that are not seal knives that would fit the bill.
