SEAL knives

Charlie -- you've gotten some pretty good advice here, as well as some research. Since you may well be a total newbie, Steven Dick is Editor of Tactical Knives magazine. A former SF-type, he is very knowledgeable about knives for the over-yonder troops.

I'm surprised nobody suggested the Camillus Talon for you. A bit pricey, but with a Talonite blade, it isn't capable of corroding, and allegedly will cut forever, and then 3 more days. 1SKS and other on-line dealers carry them.

If you've not noticed it, near the top of the page the word search appears. SInce this forum was just archived, if you don't find anything you like there, go back to the most recent archive and search for SEAL, salt water or whatever. Am sure you'll find a great deal of worthwhile information.

Good luck deciding on a knife. Sorry, but I don't know anything directly about Mad Dog knives. They are highly regarded and fairly highly priced. Believe all teh knives suggested would be a step upwards from the old pilots knife.

Hope you stick around awhile. Then see if you can only buy 1 knife every 5 years!

. i was wondering, along the lines of the timberline, has anyone had any experience with the timberline aviator. it looks to be some sort of smaller version of the spec war, but i'm not really sure.

that sure looks like it! my memory isn't perfect, but as far as i can tell, that is the knife i was asking about, thanks for the detective work!

Was talking to a SEAL this past weekend- his carry: an Endura & a KaBar. Pretty simple.

Charlie:

My best advice for you on this subject is to sit down and write a list of all the attributes in a knife that you want, and then rank them in order of importance. Make sure you include the sheath too.

By doing this, you can ensure that you get exactly what will serve your needs. A Busse Battle Mistress would be a great knife to own!! But the Battle Mistress is a super duper chopper, and if you are wanting a knife good around water because you sail boats, you don't have much need for a chopper!! But maybe a different Busse knife would suit your needs.

Oh, again, MAKE SURE you include what is important to you with respect to the sheath, and also include what "styles" are important to you. I prefer military back packs to other back packs, partly just because I LIKE the military stuff, even though some other packs may give me more "bang for the buck". So, if you really like a Busse, a Mad Dog, or a classic SEAL knife, go for it. but make sure you understand what you are getting.

Good luck Charlie!!

Oh, you can check the For Sale (knife exchange) section here to find some good deals on knives too!

OK, I can go one better. John Richter is a Master Chief active duty SEAL - He calls his design for a jungle knife a lopper. Here's one in his own san mai damascus. The handle is lignum vitae he brought back from Panama.

From what I'm told, he may be cooking up a batch in working steel this fall...
