Recently, i got myself an SOG Seal Pup. After that i went online to do some research and i found out that my Seal Pup is different from the picture on the SOG website. The one i have looks like an improved version, and it's inclined more towards the Seal Pup Elite's design. So now, the only difference between Seal Pup and Seal Pup elite is just the blade material and the blade thickness? Wow... i'm definitely loving the new Seal pup design!

Got pics ? Lets see some. I got a seal pup, love it. My buddy got a seal pup elite. His handle is better due to the better grip, more of the diamond pattern. But my blade is better IMHO, bead blasted his black, mine made in japan his Taiwan. So i would love to see your pics if the have merged the two designs.

The only thing I really like more about the new seal pup is the blade is offered plain I believe the seal pup only is serrated. The steel thickness is not much so that doesnt bother me. The AUS 8 steel is barely noticably better than AUS6 in my experience. My seal pup is still goin gstrong after beating crap out of it for the last 7 years. I will get another soon.

Ok. I got the photos of my Seal Pup. It sure looks more like the Seal Pup Elite, just without the jigged spine.
Anyway... how to delete a post?

Yeah, I bought one like that on ebay, and turned around and sold it a couple months later. You are right, they do look more like the Elite model. That's reason I bid on the one I got, because the pic they had was blury, and I figured the seller didn't know what they had.

Does it have Taiwan on the tang? If you read the sticky at the top of this page http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=635246 about where sogs are made, on the list it says that the M37 SEAL Pup is made in Japan and Taiwan and that the M37T SEAL Pup Elite is made exclusively in Taiwan.
My theory is that the SEAL Pups made in Taiwan look like the Elites, most likely because they are made in the same place with the same machinery setup(guessing here).

Oh and according to that list, there is such a thing as non-serrated Pup Elite
(E37S SEAL Pup Elite - Straight (Black TiNi Blade)), and I'm pretty sure I've seen them.

The Seal Pup i have doesn't have anything written on it's tang. But it's made in taiwan

I mean the base of the tang, base of the blade, right side, opposite the side with the SOG SEAL PUP logo. I can see now from your second pic it looks like it says Taiwan. Anyway it's a dead ringer for the one I had.

If I remember right, this is what Chris said a while ago. He also said the Seal Pups (non Elite) made in Taiwan were AUS8 steel, instead of the usual AUS6

Haha, my point is that the seal pup produced now really looks better. Sog has done well this time =)

That is the Seal Pup elite's handle! They must have started using it for the regular pup too, which is great. That handle feels at home in your hand.

I believe Nutnfancy took it up in a review, he had an old version of the Seal Pup, where the unsharpened part of the blade between the edge and the handle was very long, basically the same length as on the Seal 2000, leaving not so much plain edge because of the fairly long serrated edge. On the Seal Pup Elite, the edge was significantly longer.

How old is that review? I swung by the local Base Exchange and saw what appears to be the version nutnfancy was looking at, not like the ones previously pictured.

Here is the new style of the basic Pup. The handle is different from the older Pup model. More along the lines of the Elite.

There are 2 versions of the Pup floating around but several versions of the Pup Elite.

Yep, thats what I have been seeing floating abouts. I do think that I like the other blade variant without that inch or so of unsharpened metal.

I have two versions of the Pup Elite. One has the powder coated blade with serrations and the other is the plain edge in a satin finish.

I much prefer the Elite to the older standard Pup. When the Elite version came out, I was sold. NO serrations, shorter choil, larger and more ergonomic handle. I had the original Pup and sold it. Just couldn't warm up to its drawbacks.

Well I took your word on it DRE and picked up one of the newer models at the BX here on base. Though I wasnt estatic on the country of origin, it is a great little knife and seems to be made real well made so I cant knock it. Now to just find some stuff to cut:D

I found another difference in the 2 Pup Elites I own, blade thickness. From the literature from SOG I was under the impression that ALL of the Pup ELites are manufactured using thicker blade stock. Not so. My non-serrated version is a full 3/8th's thick - thicker than my serrated model. Its even thicker than my Ka-Bars and Buck 119. All are made in Taiwan but differ in thickness.

My recommendation is buy the non-serrated, polished version and have a smaller but heavier duty blade than a standard Ka-Bar.

My dad has that same exact knife. It's identical in every aspect to the TiNi-coated Seal Pup Elite that I have, except for his has a powder coat. It's not marked as a Pup Elite though, just Seal Pup, which is throwing me off. Can anyone tell me what's going on?

It's a Seal Pup made in the same manufacturing facility as their Seal Pup Elite
