"Seal-Team" Knife

Yes, Mel, I inherited it from my Grandmother. I also inherited the rest of her collection, which consisted of a U.S.M.C. fixed blade from the 40's, and several commemorative pieces.

According to my Dad, she received the Buckmaster as a gift from her friends when she retired. I had no idea she even collected knives until my Dad gave me her collection. He kept the little doctor's knife that she carried in a small leather pouch.

She was a hell of a woman, and I was very close to her in my childhood. She is missed dearly.

I have a lot of respect for Buck, and I´ve heard of people still wanting one of those, but it is a bit too much for me, a product of the Rambo hype or something like that I guess.

I saw one of those in a Mexican sports shop years ago, and read something about it in some pamphlet or magazine, if I remember correctly it mentioned it could be used as an anchor for a canoe !!??, also the studs and the cap of the handle could be unscrewed so that a piece of wood or branch could be slid inside and tied up using the holes in the hilt to make a spear, The big teeth on the back could be used to cut the sides of a helicopter to escape after an accident (I´ve seen those in other knives too), and it had serrations as for cutting rope (I believe this was before serrations became really popular).

I wouldn´t be interested in carrying one of those but if I got one as a gift or something I would keep it, I might even buy one if I found it real cheap, I feel it has a cool Rambo-Klingon-Batman-Ninja look to it.

then why was it so massively imitated?

Rather than imitated I'd say the operative word would be "imitator" at least as regards most of the Buckmaster's features (the exception being, of course, the screw-in anchors, to which Buck holds the UN-enviable position of being the first and last to try them).
Please correct me if I'm faulty in my memory! Pobody's nerfect! :-)

There have been several knock-offs, some even sold in the late 1990s and possible still on the market, that have those "anchors." IIRC the two models I've seen most frequently have leather sheaths and none are as built up as the Buskmaster.

I just found one at www.eknifeworks.com called the "Poorman Robinson Crusoe Survival Knife" for $8.99.

I've got a Buck with an identical blade (but smaller) with a kraton handle, and a camo nylon sheath. The big serrations are ridiculous, but SMKW was out of the nonserrated version, and the price was right. The smaller serrations on the clip aren't bad.

A friend of mine bought the version with the same blade/same size but all steel with no guard, just some rubber material on the flat handle portion. It had the same big teeth on the back and small serrations on the clip. Came in a plastic sheath. He let me use it on a weekend outing. Boy was it uncomfortable to hold and no way to shorten up. Pretty much useless. A month later, he cut himself badly on those big teeth.
