Just put on my set of Bocote scales and was wondering if it needs a sealer, or can it just be sanded and buffed and be ok, it seems to be real oily. If it needs a sealer, what works well on it? Dale.
I've used some bocote and here is the way I finished it: hand sand to 2000 grit and finish with Birchwood Casey gun stock wax, following the directions on the bottle, then buff with a soft cloth. It takes a great finish like this. Bocote is so oily, I can't imagine it needing stabilizing, though I don't have any that is over 4 or 5 years old. I do have a piece of Bocote heartwood that is 4" x 18" x 1/2" (bought several years ago for a non knife project) that has been in my garage for those several years that hasn't cracked or warped in it's natural state.
On the other hand, I've never heard of proper stabylizing hurting anything!
