I dont know if anyone else has figured this out. So I'll go ahead and post my findings anyway.

1) bring up google

http://www.google.com/

2) Type in the persons username, or subject your searching for.
like this (include the qoutes) "J.S. Carter" bladeforums.com
hit enter

3) Now at the bottom is a link that says
"repeat the search with the omitted results included." click on that

VOILA! you have poor boy search capabilities

Wow, I had been doing all my searching on British Blade Forums. If I keep hanging over there I might I might not need this place. It's pretty good. I must qualify I've only been searching stuff over there for about a week.

Thanks for the tip. I might try it.

For less than .03 cents per day you can use the search function provided by BFC.

The reason why search was shut down was to save bandwidth. Your trying to circumvent the rules is not going to enhance your status on this site.

I suggest you support the site or at the very least follow its rules if you wish to continue to pariticipate here.

What status do we have here and how would searching on Google decrease this so called status?

It is a good solution for those who cannot pony up, but it is rather a pain to search that way. After some point, it would be simply easier to pay for a membership for the few dollars.

Heck the cost of a membership wouldn't barely buy enough gas to make the gas gauge move at these prices today. Walk a couple times a week instead of driving for those short trips, and there will be enough money for a membership and a bottle of scotch.

Let me see, a posting on how to circumvent the rules--how would that affect your status?

What is your status exactly? You are allowed to participate here at no cost, because of the owner's generosity. That permission may be revoked by the owner or moderators for not following the rules, bad behavior, or a number of other reasons.

Blues, the poster has posted almost 200 times. It seems to me that he is supporting the site with free and valuable information for others to read about. He's just trying to help the members of the site. Right?

We didn't restrict search because we hate registered users, we did it to reduce an unsustainable load on the servers pending hardware upgrade. There are more detailed instructions on how to use google for a workaround already posted in Sticky: Search Engine FAQs & Tips

Let’s see if we can find the right forum …

Using Google Search by NO MEANS increases BF's bandwidth usage nor is it circumventing any rules. You are using Google's bandwidth and reading their indexed pages.

The only disadvantage to using Google is that you can only search open forums (i.e ones that you can view while not being logged in).

I think Spark should look into the Yahoo Slurp Spider anomaly - that has about 20-50 robots sucking bandwidth at a time.

Those rules don't extend outside of Bladeforums.com. My status? Well, I have been following the rules, refrained from bad behavior when I could have said a lot of bad things to a lot of people on this forum. I do have one infraction for bumping too early in the trade forums. If they want to revoke those privileges from me for saying this than go ahead. Removing the search function from non-paying members was just a business tactic to make more money and weed out all the non-paying members. I'm not stupid to pay for a search function when I have a better one for free on google.

cgusek111, I don't think it is just a business tactic. I'll take their word that they are trying to upgrade their servers. It is nice to take things on face value. If we are here two months later, with no search function, then maybe you are right. I'd doubt it though. To many new members will find this place worthless without search functions, in my opinion. I know I would have never hung around here for over a year without it.

When I didn't know anything about bladeforums last year I was able to search through archives through Google. Unfortunately, I don't know how I did it.

You could be right. I hope your right. From my experience, 9 times out of 10, in a business the only thing people are after is the money, but there is still that one that does it because they love it and doesn't care about the money. Those are few and far between.

I just got an infraction for "trolling." Add that to my status list. I thought I was just speaking up for what I believed.

BFC a business ? Lordy.

What is BladeForums.com?

BladeForums.com is the largest, most active, and best knife discussion website in the world. Our goal is the continued education and improvement of the Knife Industry, by providing an outlet for manufacturers, dealers, custom makers and end users to communicate.

This site is run as a public service to the industry, without asking anything for the free flow of information.

Paying for a membership helps keep the place we enjoy coming to open.

Two moderators just explained to you that the issue was bandwidth related on the site and it was a means to end the slow response time which effected everyone.

Still, you felt it important to state that it was a financially driven ploy which implies that both Cougar and I lied to you and the other members.

Trolling is exactly what that was, not standing up for your beliefs.

Who's making the money then?
Bladeforums is providing a service and people are paying for that service. Someone must be making the money/profit. If that's not a business then what is?

Because I disagree with you on this bandwidth crap. You gave me an infraction. At no time did I call you or cougar a liar. Show me where you explained this to me before you gave me the infraction. As I recall I posted after you, Blue.

Some folks just don't want to hear the truth. Conspiracy theories abound. Perhaps some time off will help him realize that the explanations provided were true and offered in good faith.
