Seat Belt Cutter... Rope?

I spend my summers home from school working at a local rock wall and climbing in my spare time. I have yet to find a knife that I can use for daily grind stuff and as a good solid rope cutter. (mind you this is 1/4 thick climbing rope not something from a box in your garage) I have seen many "rescue" knives for cutting seat belts, will these work as well with rope? I am willing to carry two knives (my daily carry and another for rope) especially after getting twisted up in some interesting configurations about 40 feet off the ground. Another issue to carrying it securely clipped to a harness or other rig. I have had knives fall (well I dropped them on occasion too) out of pockets and even some when hung by their lanyard hole that open randomly. So something secure would also be appreciated.

Any suggestions or input would be great! Thanks.

Looks nice not sure if I could get some of my rope in the small gap. Does your friend use it often? How doe he sharpen the round blade? Looks very intense, like it might hold up well to the beating I put my stuff through.

:)I would go with a fully serrated hawbill, for cutting rope or any other fibrous materials. That's about the only reason why I would want serrations.;)

Spyderco Harpy comes to mind...

The Spyderco Harpy features a curved blade for making controlled pulling cuts. The handle and clip are constructed from stainless steel and the blade is ATS-55 steel. The locking lever dent allows for easy opening.

would like to see some G10 scales on this one though

If you live in a state that allows auto there are plenty of the old Shrade Air Force knives on the market at decent prices. The SOG Bi-Polar has a good main blade and a V-Cutter blade as well. On a budget Petzl makes some nice knives for climbers. You might also consider some of the mariner knives on the market, not only are they designed to cut rope but the marlin spike is great for working knots out of a rope.

He carries it with him everyday, and uses it whenever he can.

You can send it back to the ZT to get a factory edge on it whenever you want, free of charge. The gap is .34 inches wide, so you should have no trouble cutting quarter inch cordage. On top of that, it comes with a life-time warranty, just like all ZT products.

Get any fully serrated spyderco you like, they will all cut rope easily. A hawkbill will cut rope great but is useless for edc IMO. But if you don't mind carrying 2 knives, a SE hawkbill is great paired with a PE folder of your choice. The ZT will be slower than a knife, its just meant for cutting close to people so you don't hurt them. It wont cut thick knots either.

That's the only reason I recommended what I did.:)

I would never carry a fully serrated hawkbill as an EDC:confused:

Why not a good little fixed blade like the Rat Cutlery RC-3 with partial serrated edge. One of the best production sheaths out there and will hold the knife as secure as you want.

Clip it to one of your gear loops and it'll always be at hand, you don't have to worry about it dropping, and it's great for cutting rope.

Gotta ask though, don't it get a little expensive to be always cutting yourself out of trouble? I pay enough for my ropes that I wouldn't ever want to sacrifice one just because I was careless.

Spyderco Salt , Boker Rescom , other Spyderco rescue blades , all will sail thru rope .

Benchmade has a series of seatbelt cutters .I carry the best of them which I have in my truck .I picked this one as I work at automobile rallys and may have to cut through heavy race car seatbelts. I think that's the best on the market .1/4" rope will be cut in an instant with this !!!

Not to take away from knife talk but I spent thirteen years on the sharp end of a rope and never needed to cut anything, while off the ground.

YMMV
