Seat Belt Cutter... Rope?

I think you should look at either the Boker Rescom or the Spyderco Remote Release 2. The RR2 is designed for the type of application you specified and can be had for around $50. http://spyderco.com/catalog/details.php?product=205

Lockbacks are the best for accidental opening prevention as they have a design that resists opening and actively closes the blade up until a certain point.

A fully serrated Spyderco with a pocket clip is also a great choice as Spyderco makes some of the best serrations in the business. You can usually find excellent deals on slightly used to used knives in the buy/sell forums here.

Ah Pook,

Our wall is mounted to scaffolding which is then mounted to steel beams in the building's construction, so we spend a lot of time behind the wall checking bolts etc. We also have a bell mounted to the scaffolding that hangs out over the top edge of the wall for our climbers to ring when they reach the top. I frequently am changing out the ropes and mount for the bell to keep it safe and other various things we have stored and mounted behind the wall, I have never had to cut anything to save myself from falling, but have had to to spare myself some pain :(

Just looked at the CRKT A.B.C. Operator's Model, the serrated edge on the back side of the blade looks like they would make light work of rope. This knife would also seem practical for a daily use/work knife on days at the wall.... any opinions on this one?

Hey Guys..

If I were going to buy a rope cutter, I'd head Straight for the Spydercos...

A Hawkbill or a Rescue would be the ticket !!

Victorinox rescue tool, has a lot of features, with e special seat belt-dress blade , a saw designed for fiberglass and a punch for windows cristall braking. it has also a luminescent handle. And the special blade-punches can be changed. You can find a nice promo video on You-tube. It's seems a real good item, specifically for rescue man, but with thecent one hand loking blade too.

It is a myth that you need serrations to cut rope - a sharp plain edge will breeze through it.

In the past I have cut ½" fire service general purpose line with one cut from a plain edged Benchmade 710.

Just get the plain edged knife of your choice and a Spyderco Sharpmaker.

I'm with you.

I don't understand why all the rescue tools are being posted? those blunt tip deals are for prying and wall breeching.

I'd also take the 710 in my pocket over any "seatbelt cutter" made. But, I also hear your problem about dropping them or falling out. RAT3 was suggested adn I agree. Even better, get an RC-3

you could hang it where ever you please. I wouldn't use it for anything but emergencies either. If I were you, I'd take it, factory edge and strope it until you can tweeze nose hair by the bevel. Then don't use. Never. Not until you have to.

The issue with not have a blunted tip is the risks of stabbing yourself in a panicked situation. With a blunt tip there is no risk. That said, get a Rescom. They are legal everywhere, easy on the wallet, and cut very nicely!

I'd think if the boys on a knife forum he's grown out of training wheels. whatever keeps you safe I guess.

I'm not looking for an emergency knife or seat-belt cutter. I'm looking for a knife that I can safely carry and use in a rock climbing setting where rope will be frequently cut. We change ropes and rigging often so I need something that can repeatedly cut through thick rope without issue. My question was whether or not a seat belt cutter of some wort would be effective at all or over time.

And yes my training wheels have been removed, but I still occasionally fall off my bike, don't we all :)
