Seated or Standing? How to Grind

I'm scared to death of sitting in front of a rotating man eater.

I want to be able to run.

I grind standing up.

I can't bring myself to stand infront of anything that points at me from a 45 unless I have a barrier. Even my vertical grizzly has a 4ftsq piece of plywood infront, that I lean against my legs while working.

There's danger afoot just being in front of a moving grinding belt. The first and only time an 80 grit belt snapped and came down across my face, I learned a lot, it didn't take much time to sink in.

I now inspect belts before use. If I hear a strange sound coming from the machine; I hit the off button. When turning on the machine, my head moves to the side automatically, out of line with the moving belt.

It seems like all accidents in the shop happen in a split second, one second your fine the next you have a sharp thing in your leg.

I remember you talking about that in another thread and that specific story is one of the reasons I opted for a full face respirator. I have only ever had one belt snap and it was pretty uneventful but ever since your story I lean to the side of the belt every single time I turn it on. Thanks. I still think you are crazy to sit infront of a 45 deg platen without a barrier. Heck, just lean a 8" wide board from your chest to an anchor spot.

Here are some pics I just took. The first one is how I normally grind with the board against my legs. The second is a makeshift seated position with a board as a guard... you get the idea.

I think that has to be the reasoning behind the design of my Square Wheel. I've snapped two and they just get bunched up inside the casing. I grind sitting on a bar stool with the blade about belly high and my elbows at right angles. I need to use a jig and I find this the most comfortable position.

I wear a double thickness apron when grinding; its a regular leather apron with a 5/16 panel sewed on the front, it covers all the vital areas; well they used to be vital anyhow. :)
The wooden panel is a good idea. As long as it keeps the sharp stuff away from arteries and veins.
I won't go near the buffer without the apron on. Talking about scary; you can make your life flash before your eyes in an instant.

Work safe my friend!
