Seax Etching Update: (mpisi's HI PK 2)

..Finished up Pen's complex Ogham inscription. Seax went out yesterday.

Mpisi's Pen Knife flies this weekend, after some pix of this bad boy.

Sorry for the delays.

all this talk of etching, and no pics?

i can't even determine what the heck is getting done exactly, so please post some pics!!

I'll post some once I get it back if Ferrous doesn't.

It has the same sun and moon etching on the blade as the passaround Pen Knife. Additionally, runes like the sexy seaxii, and some carving/etching work on the buttcap too.

So maybe Pen will shoot some when he gets it.

For those going "Huh?" Check this past work out, the HI seax:

So it's on the way? I hope so, I really need some good news this week... :( A "new" khuk will be just the ticket! :)

Ferrous,

This may sound stupid, but do you engrave and etch by freehand or do you have some kind of stencil set-up?

Basically, the process involves taking light and sticky plastic tape (either brown or clear boxing tape) and encasing the blade carefully in the tape, making sure there are no gaps or bubbles. Then I draw the design right in the tape with a staedler 1-2mm permanent marker. Then I cut through the mask (or resist, basically the term for the covering that 'resists' the etchant) with an exacto knife, carefully following the lines. You then remove the parts of the mask where you want the etchant to etch, then immerse the resist-coated blade in the etchant or ladel the etchant over the blade (if it is a really fast etchant like FeCl).

As you can see, with patience you can cutt some wavy lines:
