Seaxes

Well, I have a lot of viking blood in my veins, and I want to get a piece I can use and sort of connect with my ancestors as odd as that sounds.

Doesn't sound odd. Old style knives of all sorts help us all to "connect" with older times and people. Just read some of Carl's stories int the "Jackknife's Tales" thread, and you'll see we all understand. However, I think you'd get more response to your question of where to get a seax knife if you ask in the exchange area. Typically, we don't duiscuss vendors in the Traditional subforum.
I wish you success on your search!

The problem with those is none of them have the right blade shape or if they do the tang is cheap and crappy

I associate seaxes with the Anglo-Saxons of which I am one.

Did the Vikings use them also?

There are some Osprey books on the period but I don't know if I can find them. Think a move within the last year and a wife that is very good at packing things away.

For recommendations you might want to check out: Tod's Stuff (UK) - Leo Todeschini does very nice work, Patrick Barta (do a search for TEMPL) does exquisite work - be prepared to wait as he likely has a queue of clients, Ben Potter also does very nice work as does JT Pälikkö, Baltimore Knife & Sword, S Branson (who made an exquisite gladius which is posted in this same forum), and you could also inquire with Forty Two Blades as well. Best of luck in your search!

There are actually a fair number of rather different blade shapes that get called "seax". It'd help if you could post an example picture of what you're envisioning.

JohnnyMayhem - I've done a couple, but not that many.

you might be happy with scorpion swords for a seax. I find their swords a little too club like but for a seax would probably be ok. They don't do the distal taper thing.

Else you could check out albion swords bare blades, you could buy the blade and hilt it yourself which is not too difficult and rewarding.

My main issue is the size. I don't want a sword I want something under 10"

ok, the albion bare blade is 12" so a bit long for you then.

You should give a price range you are looking to spend, plenty of makers here could get you exactly what you wanted or arms and armour makes some nice custom seaxs they have shown on their custom page

I need to check A&A last time I did I didn't see any seaxes. I really only want to spend maybe 100 but if it's something amazing 200

The A&A is pictured on the custom page and not sure if that would fit your price point, you might be able to get a bare bones version. The site says contact us for a current quote so the price is not listed.

I'm sure scorpion swords would make you one to fit the length you want, I would say their quality matches their price point though if you know what I mean.

I second Pueo's recs for Tod's Stuff, Patrick Barta, and Ben Potter and would add Owen Bush to the list. All do excellent work from what I have seen and read. Also you might want to look at Christof Harper's work at Koyote Knives. I love the look of his seaxes and he's done traditional leukus in the past so he knows how to put together a more traditional hilt if you prefer not to have an exposed tang. You might check on Etsy as well. I think Mad Dwarf Workshop used to have an Etsy storefront before they became better known. They do some interesting seaxes as well, but with more of a fantasy feel.

Whatever the case, though, you are probably looking at a semi-custom piece. Not many manufacturers selling seaxes at the moment, especially broken back seaxes like the ones that you linked. I keep a pretty close eye on the style.

Just for the drool factor you should also go visit Jake Powning's webpage. Absolutely amazing work.
