Sebenza and others?

I am open to the idea of spending a little more and getting something with Damascus .....

You can buy a Sebenza with Damascus. No problem.
The Sebbie is probably the finest folder in that price range...bar none.
There are others, but none are built to the same precision as is the Sebenza....at least short of hi-dollar customs.
And they won't be any smoother...IMO.
I've had perhaps 15 or so Sebenzas. Just be very SURE that you get either a large or small that fits your hand. You don't want to buy the wrong size.
Good luck.

Hey guys I am loving all the responses! Sonnydaze, I will definitely be getting a small sebenza, I've got a small set of mitts!

I have a large carbon fiber 21. Best EDC I've had, although for some reason my spyderco military shares the same place in my heart. I kind of wish I got a plain insingo, but a carbon fiber drop point works for me too.

This. I've grown to like my VECP more than my sebenza. Great knife.

So have I. Exactly why it is my suggestion. I choose the VECP over the Sebenza every time.

If you are looking at a smaller size then definitely check out the AG Russell Acies 2. Way better steel as far as I'm concerned.

I am going to pull the trigger on a small sebenza 21.

Bladehq doesnt have em in stock, any other forum dealers to check out?

Will it be a user? Most people cringe at the thought of using a damascus blade.

I have a small 21 with wood inlay and waited 2 months before I could use it hard.

I have large small and mnanadi and id say small is perfect for most pants and it is no way too small for cutting tasks.

large is great but bulky in pants.

if small, wood inlays feel great in the hand compared to plains.

If you decide to get a Sebenza, your decisions are just begining.. Large or small, plain or graphics, inlays, Insigno, tanto, damascus? The options are many. Enjoy the process of choosing one.

So due to the fact that I wont really want to really use the knife if I get a damascus blade, Ive decided to opt for the plain blade.

Definitely will be going with the small 21. I have pretty small mits.

Is it foolish for me to snag the classic knife without considering one with inlays? I have not been impressed with the graphics (not my style) and I am one to appreciate a nicely finished piece of metal, maybe its the mechanical engineer in me ;) But the looks of the knives with inlays do not completely appeal to me.

Anyone have any pictures they are willing to post up? Maybe i could be swayed :)

My question, what else should I look at that is in the price range, similar quality, and low key simple looks?

IMO there is no other manufacturer that has similar quality in this price range, and I can't think of another that has the low key simple look of the Sebenza.
You could go custom and find something close, but I also prefer the Sebenza over any customs in this price range.

I think you would love a small plain or micarta inlay. I prefer the tumbled blade, and only the plain and micarta have it.

I believe you may submit your own graphic if you don't like the ones readily available

The CRK knives are extremely well-made with tight tolerances and work very smoothly. I have a Small Sebenza 21 Insingo and a Mnandi Bocote Wood. The fit and finish is out of this world. It's not surprising that CRK has won Blade Show's "Manufacturing Quality Award" 12 out of the past 13 years and consecutively since 2003!

Like most said, only complaint anyone has is price and maybe ergonomics.

I think small sebenza is a perfect knife.

I edc small seb.

Chris Reeve know's how to make a knife. I've used and sold so many other production companies knives, and while nice, they just don't handle or work like a seb.

I know it sounds like a fanboy, but there was a point not too long ago where I had everthing in the drawer, BM, Spyderco, CRKT, Buck, Kershaw, Emerson, what have yous - the sebenza just can not be beat. The 25, small insingo with micarta, and the Starbenza are all my current personal favorites.

Eventually you buy one, maybe you don't carry it, maybe you do. But it finds pocket time, and then with carry comes use. You will realize you want more. The other production knives end up getting sold to buy more CRK.

It's a dangerous habit. Not to say I exclusively carry a CRK, but let's just say they're never out of my pocket for long.

Hope this helps.

Small sebenza: fabulous knife.

I will pull the trigger very soon :) I just ordered a DMT dia sharp coarse, fine, and extra fine, a strop and some green compound.....

Hey guys!

Im tossing around the idea of splurging on a Sebenza 21 here pretty soon. I have never handled one, but I hear great things, and I love the way it looks.

My question, what else should I look at that is in the price range, similar quality, and low key simple looks? [...snip...]

A Chris Reeve is a Chris Reeve. If you are dead-set on getting one, all the best to you.

That being said, as others have stated, have a look a Les George's (like the "VECP" model) works or more recently Calavera Cutlery/Jeremy Robertson's "El Patron".

But the closest one I think to the pedigree; once upon a time Scott Cook learned under Chris Reeve before making it on his own. His well known "Lochsa" shows the influence and are popular "grail" knife. The thing is though the waiting period for these rare beauties.

Notice that the handle is a single piece of Ti and sculpted!
