Sebenza blade chipped by cutting Starbucks bag

Sorry for the delay in responses. I've been out shopping all afternoon.

Got any pics?
Unfortunately no. I've already repaired the damage.

There is no way a coffee bag could 'chip' any blade... maybe a plastic blade, but that would be about it.
Well I don't know what to tell you. It did and that is what baffles me.

Does that small 25 say sanrenmu on the blade? Then yeah maybe the 8cr3movish steel would chip on a Starbucks bag.
What is a small 25? This is a standard Sebenza 25 purchased from my local knife shop http://www.knivesshipfree.com/chris-reeve-knives-large-sebenza-25/

Try it again, see if you get the same results with before and after pics.
Good idea. I will consider it.
The issue is I don't have a microscope to take pictures and the chips were only noticeable as chips in the loupe. Maybe I would be able to hold the loupe in front of the camera but I've never tried that.

If they're really that small, the its probably just a wire edge that took some damage while cutting

It's not well known that Starbucks uses DLC lined coffee bags with a HRC of 45

Odd. I always noticed the heat treat on the CRK folders was a tad softer and I can certainly say I have never seen a chip on the dozen or so I have used , sharpened or worked on.
Stay away from those crazy hard bags.

Ahhahahah! (In response to the 45 hrc dlc lined bag)

I have been impressed with the sebenza blade, i could not see it chipping or even dulling on a Starbucks Coffee bag, maybe there was some hard plastic from warehous/shipping that melted on the bag?

I use my sebenza to open bags of wasabi, it comes in a metallic bag (since wasabi melts plastics), and I've never even seen it dull on those...

Once I was cutting a cardboard box and it went through too fast and met a stainless steel table and suffered a rolled edge but didn't chip.

A couple weeks ago I purchased a bag of Starbucks coffee beans at Costco. The store has a grinder near the exit of the store so I whipped out my Sebenza 25 and made a clean swipe across the top of the bag to open it. Later I noticed a rough dull section of the blade right where I swiped across the bag. Upon inspection under a 10X loupe it was evident that the edge had sustained multiple small chips. The edge was not rolled, just chipped away. The bag is just a normal Mylar material I think so I'm surprised this could happen to such a high quality steel.

The edge is precisely profiled to 36 degrees inclusive and polished using my EPA. Is it possible this angle is too acute? Or does Mylar, or whatever the Starbucks coffee bag is made of, have some weird attribute that destroys even the finest edges?

I have ceased using Starbucks Coffee due to their non support for our military.

Are you sure thats true?

Mike

It was something I read. So take it for what it's worth. I went and Google this particular article and found out that it was indeed an old story from 2004 and after some further digging found out that it was a misunderstanding on the soldier in questions part. So, that being said, I too was in error in my statement. So I retract it and will go back to the consumption of their coffee. (thank goodness, I was having withdrawals!) lol

Had a bunch here too over the years, no issues.

So many rumors on the net I never know what to believe and what not to believe! If it's important to me I always try to do a little digging. Later Ron.

I was going to say before your correction, when I was in Iraq I remember getting at least one or two package from Starbucks. They actually support local firefighters too, they give us the "out of date" coffee for free sometimes.

I've never had Dunkin coffee... come to think of it, the only Starbucks I have had is double chocolate frappucino.
