Sebenza Blade Edge Crumbled !!!

I believe this blade had the factory edge and was not tampered with. I sharpend it on my vintage V crock sticks when I got it. About 8-10 times per side and it was scary sharp. It is broken about 1/8 into the edge of the blade and it is still Very thin. The blades are definately high hollow ground. My camera will not zoom in to give you guy a better look.

One last crazy thought, if the heat treat isn't bad, just some kind of inclusion at that spot, how 'bout having CRK grind it into a recurve. A recurve, tanto Sebenza in BG-42, sounds pretty collectible to me :D

I've had both BG-42 and S30V Sebenzas. There was ONE difference I could notice in the two....and that's that S30V is easier to sharpen and thus takes a sharper edge much easier. You MIGHT be able to get a BG blade sharper....but most people aren't skilled enough in the way of sharpening and wouldn't be able to tell a difference anyways. I sold my BG blades for the simple reason that I like S30V more and I bought a large AND small sebenza used for what one new BG sold for :p

You won't be disappointed with the S30V, it's better steel in my book. There's a reason they went from ATS-34 to BG-42 and also a reason why they went to S30V after that. Just part of improving their product. If you look, Strider made the same leaps at around the same times I believe under the same line of thought.

The only way you'll loose is that the S30V won't be worth as much but if you intend to use it you'll only benefit. Just my .02

Sorry to see that nyefmaker; I'm sure CRK will take good care of you.

It's true, my BG-42 blade took longer to sharpen the way I like'em, but since then, the thing kicks a$$! I used both my S30V and BG-42 on wood, cardboxes, sandwiches(!) and were the S30V lost it's bite (still very "usable sharp"), the BG-42 one easily shaves. Just my own experience, though...YMMV.

I was slicing the bark off a walking stick and when I went to put it back in my pocket, to my horror, I saw that some of the blade was missing !!!

Horror is correct. I do not know what went wrong, but I am sure that CRK will make right. I hope your weekend gets better.

sounds like a heat treatment problem, where the near center edge just flaked off or easily chips and breaks apart.
No problem other then the temporary disappointment of seeing it happen.:( CRK I'm sure will make the repair a high priority and you will be once again slicing and dicing in no time.

Out of curiosity, will they be giving you an S30V replacement, or reformulate a batch of BG42 just for you?

They keep a small inventory of blades, regular handles, etc. from discontinued items JUST for warrenty issues. These are NOT available to buy ( I have tried...lol ). I was told today when I called they may have a BG-42 blade put aside for a warranty issue like this. If not, they will make one up out of S30V steel. They do not offer BG-42 blades anymore and will not anymore. They just basically have some old stock for warrenty issues like mine. Once they are gone, there gone. Then, they replace with what is currently offered....S30V. I would prefer a BG-42 blade, but if not, the S30V is not a bad substitute. I like them both !

I also had chipping on my Large s30v regular from 08... And the lock up was at about 95-100%... They barely sharpened the small chips out.. or look into the problem.. No fix on the over travel.. Even they say 75% is great and I agree... But not 100% out of the box.. And dull to boot.. Even after sending it in. I know they do great things for many people and they knife was top notch.. But those issues were not taken care of.
Good luck..
That looks more severe .. So I would think they should replace it.?
