Hi,
I'm starting thinking about getting myself a large sebenza. I have a question for the knowledgeable people on the forum about the different blade steels : what is the main difference between the S30V and the BG42 steel?
Also, I have a shadowIII that I like a lot but find to be slightly too short handle wise; has anybody ever made longer butt caps (say 3/4" longer)for these knives? I have access to a machine shop and thought about having one made.

just do a search for the differences in steels....the topic has been beat to death. most choose S30V for easier resharpening.

These are both very good steels. S30V is the new "hot" steel and is very good. It is tougher than BG42, has better wear resistance and is easier to sharpen. Stain resistance should be similar, with S30V maybe having a slight advantage.

Two top performers, but with proper heat treating I think that S30V is the overall better knife steel.
