I have decided to take the plunge and get a Sebenza. I've decided on the small model, but I can't decide between the Classic and the 21 and the Plain version or the Micarta inlays. What should I get and why?

Thanks!!!

the Classic and 21 are identical except for a small difference near the pivot. So go with anyone. ..................The Micarta is great for edc and gives nice extra grip. So depending on your uses if grip is important go with the micarta. It is really nice and looks good. The plain jane all scratched up is what I like. Thats why I have one. To scratch it all up!

The classic has "classic MM" engraved on the pivot which bothers some people. I was fine with it until I read a review somewhere and they complained about it and now it bothers me as well. I'd go with the 21 for the cleaner looks.

How much better is the grip with the micarta model over the plain?

It helps a lot! Plain Jains are great, but after a year or so the bead blasting will smooth out and not be as grippy as is was when new, at that time you could always send it in and for a low fee CRK will re-bead blast it. When you get it back it will feel brand new again, and also look new again.

I say, go Micarta 21, and if you order it from CRK get the double lugs. IMHO they are well worth the cost, your already spending a ton of cash, the extra $30 is nothing. Over time Micarta will still be grippy, or at least the large Micarta I carried for about a year was still grippy, where as my plain Jain BG-42 regular is a slippery... but I don't have the heart to send her in and erase all her "character." :o

As for Classic vs 21, I found the 21s are smoother. I like the cleaner look of the 21's lock side, but other than that they are the same and it's up to you to decide what you like better. IMHO their are a TON of classics out there so I wouldn't buy a classic thinking it will be a collectors model some day. It's disco'ed and it may be worth a little more in ten years... but even then I doubt it.

Just get what you like, if it was me (and it was about six months ago ;) ,) I'd order a double lug Micarta 21 :)

I prefer the 21. The Classic was NOT discontinued, the regular was.

Yes, both are discontinued :)

The 21 pretty much the same as a classic, but you can't call CRK and have them make you a classic :) Which would mean... it's discontinued.

The classic also has two chamfer bevels instead of the larger single bevel going around the entire edge of the handle scales on the 21. The regular has a fillet around it's edge. The Regular is extremely comfortable because of the fillet, but the scallops on the handle really bothered me. I owned a Regular, 2 21's, and have finally settled on a Micarta Classic. The text on the classic doesn't bother me at all (and I really thought it would before I started carrying it). The micarta does add to the grip and the addition to the width feels better, but it also takes away a little from the perfect simplicity that the Sebenza is based on.

I like it without micarta, which to me is unnecessary adornment. I just like the big titanium slab, and the more banged up its gets the more I like it. It looks more utilitarian and industrial without the micarta, though it can enhance the grip.

There is a recent thread where some folks took sandpaper (something like 2000 grit) to their Sebenzas to give them a worn look. Did that to mine too, and it really looks good IMO. Harder to do that with micarta.

Bottom line is that its really subjective, and boils down to whatever floats your boat.

I like the micarta 21. Since I got it I never carry my reg with plain ti slabs. The grip is much better IMO.

That is why I bought a 21...lots of people said they were more comfortable. I find the regular, maybe due to familiarity, far far far more comfortable. I think it must be a personal thing.

I have no doubt that the titanium slabs will hold up for a lifetime, but how well does the micarta hold up over time?

I loved the small Classic micarta I had more than the large 21 micarta, so I'd try the small 21 micarta. But overall I prefer the simplicity and elegance of the plain titanium, no inlays at all. Just a blue thumbstud and backspacer for some color, or even plainer and more old school with silver thumbstud and backspacer.

Either way it won't be your last one and any of them is worth owning.

For a daily user, I prefer the plain because I feel they actually look better when they get scratched up.
