I am going to be buying a sebenza in the near future, and I was wondering if there was a difference in performance between the S30V, and the Damascus blades? I like the damascus, but will only buy it if it offers a performance advantage over the S30V. So what do you think?

Thanks!

The two DT stainless Damascus blades I have used and sharpened felt a lot like VG-10.

Both sharpened great, and had the retention of what VG-10 does. No real "tests"... though. I would wait around the exchange and grab a BG42. They pop up here a there, and are well worth the wait.

I have an S30V blade on my Stars & Stripes sebenza that will be getting a stainless damascus blade when it is ready.

Go for the Damascus, I am pretty sure some members here use them.

I have a DT SS Basket Weave Damascus Mnandi and I Love it. I have used it the last couple of weeks since I got it and prefer it to the S30V. I used it to slice the paint off thick rawhide bones that I cut with a sawzall. I had the knife shaving sharp before, after doing that for a half hour ( which I would say compares to Heavy Whittling and Carving ) was still shaving sharp when I was done. I like S30V, so I am not bashing it or saying anything negative about it. I just believe that Damascus will hold an edge longer from my experience. For me, the only drawback with Damascus is the price. I can almost buy another sebenza for what a damascus blade costs. So for me personally, I would rather have 12 sebenzas, than 6 with Damascus. BUT, the Damascus Are NICE !! With my mishap with the Bg42 blade, I question that its better than S30V ( but thats another debate ) , now you have me wondering if I should look into a damascus blade for my beautiful small unique sebenza. In the end, if you have the funds to buy a SS Damascus ( MAKE Sure you get Stainless Damascus ), get it, they are a beauty to behold and just as tough as S30V or BG42 I believe, IMHO !!!

Damascus rocks - makes the seb look totally b.a. and the DT stainless stuff has performance to spare.

It took 1.5 years for me to get my Devon Thomas raindrop Stainless damascus for my small sebenza classic....well worth the wait

I'm with The Guide. I'm seriously considering purchasing my next Sebenza with Damascus and was wondering if there is any scientific tests or analyzes done on the two.

I think the reason why damascus will have better edge retention is because of the way it is made. The time and effort heating of the steel etc......(If I am wrong please correct me for this statement)

I will let you know in a year (or so). I just ordered a Small Enigma 21 with SS Raindrop Damacus last Thursday. Heather says it is about a year lead time.
