Sebenza Edge Retention

"Contacted a lab." Sure you did.

I'd trust the designer of the knife, with his proven integrity, experience and expertise over any internet expert.

By now, I'm fairly certain I will be perfectly happy with the sebenza I get.....

Even if the videos actually DO reveal problems with the steel or heat treat, all of them were likely done closer to when the steel was first introduced, and there could easily have been a few problems with it initially.

But I have no doubt Mr. Reeve has sorted everything out by now:thumbup:

I'm still very interested in how these "problems" actually personified themselves and why after such "extensive testing" there still no idea what those "problems" might actually be ?.....It is far from good science or testing if you can only say there is a "problem" but you don't know what it is or what it even causes. Sending the materials to a Lab for examination and testing will have needed test parameters and controls, what were those ?

You're making a pretty big claim so you will need to provide some pretty substantial evidence before people start listening. :)

I have never had any problems with the HT or edge holding of any CRK knife, and I have had close to 50 at this point. The s35 holds an edge just fine for daily use, and it easy to sharpen. Similar to a previous post, I have found that a clean 600 grit edge is the perfect balance.

In my limited experience with knife steels I offer the following observation from my personal use:

1 - I notice no difference in edge retention between my CRKs and my Spyderco Southard in 204P

2 - I notice my CRKs in S35VN holds an edge much better than my Spyderco Native 5 in S35VN (early production).

3 - My CRKs in either S35VN or S30V do not compare to the great edge-holding of my Spyderco Sage 4 in S30V (the best edge-holding knife I own....though it will chip at times)

4 - I think I notice some minor variability between my CRKs, even in the same model and steel. Some seem better than others, but it's hard to separate what might be my imagination from fact, as the differences are slight.

5 - I have never had a chip or micro-chip, or an edge roll on a CRK in S35VN. The steel seems to wear away more than anything. My S35VN Native 5 will roll an edge, and I have chipped my Sage 4 in S30V, so I am left with the impression CRK chose a good "middle ground" at 58/59 HRC for S35VN.

6 - I have found that it takes longer than you think to put your first bevel (reprofile) on a CRK if you are using the Spyderco Sharpmaker. Once I had the blade properly at 40 degrees on my first 21, all was fine.

My experience is that CRK's steel choice and hardness is more than adequate for anything I do. My primary reason to chose CRK knives is my love of their design (the total package), but as people who have checked out some of my posts will know, I do use all of my knives daily, and fairly hard at times. The 'classic' S35VN review video that was posted on youtube regarding the Native 5 in S35VN being a problem, agrees with my findings. My Native 5 in S35VN sucks for edge retention, to the point where my Native sits in the bottom of my tool bag waiting for it's chance to slice open bags of gravel, or pry staples with. There's no point even sharpening it. It is clear to me that there were issues with S35VN from Spyderco in the early days, that may have tarnished the reputation of the steel in general. I do not experience anything close to what I found with this knife with CRK.

Anyways....just my impressions......nothing scientific here.

Doesn't need to be too involved to be scientific...There only needs to have the numbers to quantify the end results..As a user, your information is still usable as long as it's not overtly biased

My only question is why waste time testing it ? He would love to see it , if its bad ? Just send it in ! My blade had a hair line crack by the thumb lug. They couldnt wait for me to send it in and fix it . I was going to let it go , because it couldn't brake out. They said send it in please , we don't want one out there like that ! Expense yes ! Worth it ? Hell yes !I think rc test every batch of blades . This doesn't sound right to me. He doesn't harden as much as they could , so you can touch them up . I know by running on that old case steel , that it sure isn't soft .

Good news everyone! I finally placed the order for the small seb:thumbup:

It's a shame though, I had to get the plain Jane version because the cf inlayed went out of stock maybe two days before I was ready to buy......smh

Oh well, the plain Jane will be plenty awesome enough for me;)
