Sebenza is it right for me?

I only own one (large classic). I really wanted a small, but things just didn't work out that way. I got it, admired it but wouldn't use it. Later, I sent it to Tom Mayo for Mayonizing and it came back beyond belief. I still wouldn't use it. Finally I asked myself what I was saving it for? I had bought it to be a user and I'm not getting any younger. Finally, I popped it in my pocket and started carrying it. Got a scratch on the blade and went wild. Last weekend I was using it to cut up squid while fishing down in the Keys. Guess you could say it's a user now.

Bottom line. Get one, but USE it! I don't think they like to stay in the safe. Mine is much happier now, but needs a bath. LOL

I think you would be well served by a small Sebbie. I use one as my EDC and have found that the small Sebbie can do 99% of what it's larger counterpart can do while coming in a much more convenient size. Let us know what you decide. ;)

No real help as I don't own one and probably never will, but I was wondering: when those of you who have them and think they are the best thing since oxygen, when you send them back to be refurbished, what do you use? Do they send you a loner? Do you curl up into a ball and whimper until it comes back?

I usually just pack one of the 7 other Sebenzas I have. Or one of the 5 Striders, 4 Terzuolas, 4 Microtechs, 3 Benchmades, 2 Emersons, or a selection from a little known custom maker.

Knives are just fun collectible tools. Carry them, use them, trade them, show them off, give them to your kids.
Whimper over one, never. There's real things in life to whimper about.

sebenza, you will probably be glad you did ! However, it'll ruin your knife buying outlook, as you'll find it difficult to find other folders that match the QC of the sebbie, or mnandi.

I've owned and carried at least 7 Sebenzas over the past few years and have usually ended up selling them. What I've found is that after I sell the Sebbie, I go through many EDC's: Benchmades, Spyderco's, Microtechs, Al Mar's, Buck's, even a few high end semi-production's and customs.

What I have determined is that when I carry the Sebbie for EDC, the EDC acquistion frenzy stops. The small Sebbie is the EDC for me, paired up with one of my customized Victorinox knives, I have found the combo that works for me.

That's my opinion.

Thanks!

Thanks for the insights. When I handled some of the Sebenza's at my local knife shop, the owner stated that "some folks feel that you shouldn't use/abuse a knife that nice". I'm not certain whether he was referring to the line in general or to the damascus Mnandi that I was staring at.

Regardless, it's good to hear that the "work" is being done with the Sebenza's and that they do make good EDC knives (alright, with the cutting caveat about the Calypso Jr.).

Guess I'll soon be a bit poorer :D !

Again, thanks for the community input!

I would hope he was refering to the damascus. That does seem to be more show than go and the price tag matches.

The sebenza is the "in thing". The "cool tool." You're not cool unless you have one or more. Kind of like the Brittany Spears lunch box of the internet knife junkies. You can get as much knife for less, but then you wouldn't be cool. You can get a custom for less, but people wouldn't tell you how cool you are.

You've heard a lot of pros how about some cons. The knife is tip up, a few have had it open in their pocket. Many people don't like the ergonomics. More than a few think it's ugly. A lot of people sell them...thus it can't be that slick. The $20 refurbishing can get more expensive. It's too fragile to flick open...voids the warranty.

I carry my small Sebenza every day since 2000. It never open itself in my pocket (my knife is well maintained ;) ) and I think tip-up is the relevant configuration for a 4” handle.

I was spending approximately 430€ (~the same in $) for this knife because it wasn’t imported in France. So I think I don’t need to tell you how much I was expecting from it. After 4 years of intensive every day use, I can say without any doubt it never disappoint me. My Sebenza is now totally scratched and it is not (as far) the most beautiful knife I own, but it is my all time favourite. Not because it is “cool” to own one (in France nobody know what is a Sebenza, if I show it to somebody, he will not be very impressed :D ) but because for me it is the most logical way to made a folding knife. Everything is simple and well designed. Nothing is unnecessary. Finally you obtain a strong, hardwearing knife which is easy to use and easy to maintain.

Concerning the flicking restriction, I just want to say I can go over 6000 rpm in third speed before changing gear with my car. It will not damage the engine. But if I always drive like this, I guess the car lifetime will decrease a lot… :p

In conclusion, go for a Sebenza, you will not regret your purchase ! :D
