sebenza means 'work' in zulu, yes? Then why do I feel so bad using my sebenza for work?

I did use it a few times and scratched up the blade. darnit! Then I used it some more and figured out a way to dull the S30V blade. darnit again!

Do you know how difficult it is to sharpen S30V once it is dull? So smarty here takes a diamond sharpener stick thing and only succeeds in scrathing the blade some more!

I would enclose pics but you all might scream for my blood.

Can CRK re-buff, polish, machine, sand, pray over, whatever my blade to some semblence of normal? replace it maybe even?

I managed NOT to mess up the burl maple thank heavens. (it's a Classic)

I just know They would say USE THE KNIFE! and I want to. I just dont want to feel like I am hurting my sebenza!

any pity for me?:o any help available?

I can see how the first few scratches can be a bit of a heartbreaker. But once you're past that stage people around here have been known to call them 'character' marks. The more marks the more character.

You wouldn't want to carry around a Sebenza without character would you? lol

If the scratches are really bad though on the blade though I would just send it back to CRK and let them work their magic. I've not done it with any of my Sebenzas yet but I'v yet to hear of any bad after sales service from CRK.

CRK can also resharpen your blade. The trick is to never let it get too dull. What exactly were you cutting, and how much of it?

cardboard mostly. some thick paper. did a bunch of it. I wont do that most of the time and could have used a box cutter but they are so lame. ya know?

anyway I will call CRK and see if they can have pity on my poor miserable self! Maybe I can get them to reprofile the blade so I can use my sharpmaker. 20% each side seem conservative but mine wasnt that little for some reason. convex rather than straight I guess.

NEVER cut card board. Their can be metal particals in it and sometimes staples on edges of boxes. it will dull your knife quick as hell even if it dosnt chip the edge.

:D what if the cardboard is attacking? should I just drop to one knee and beg for someone to call Mr Strider to save me?

I like my CRK sebenza. But my Strider never shys away from terrorist cardboard! M Strider says "Attack that rogue communist bastid carboard!"

so I did with my sebenza cause that is what I had on me. S30V would be thought to be up to the task!

Cut that cardboard! I do every day! A couple swipes on my sharpmaker after work and this thing is shaving hair off my arm again. Never let it too dull though. You think your sebbie looks bad? You should see my user. Looks like its been ran over, dropped out a plane, and thrown on the cement. It functions as if it was brand new. Smooth as glass action. And lock up as tight as the first day I got it.

Just warning you. I wont cut card board with my strider eather. just because the warrenty is rock solid we all know they can be broken:eek:

I just spent an hour cutting 6 foot boxes into strips for the recycle at work and my sebenza is fine. Are there different types of cardboard? I'm curious. I just touch my knife up with the sharpmaker about once a week or whenever it starts to drag a little (about 5 strokes on each side) and it's good to go again. I carry a folding utility knife for cutting things that do damage as a back up when at work in order to avoid flattening or chipping the edges on my good knives. Might be a consideration.

I have a little backup (Opinel, SAK) for cardboard and other abrasive stuff.
Im with SubaruSTi, i never cut paper or worse, cardboard, with my sharp and expensive knifes. My Seb is used for fishing and attacking tomatos, bananas and other soft targets. I leave it to others doing cuttingtests with cardboard, sisal and concrete :D. I would use my Seb for such things...but only if its a MUST.
The right tool for the right job comes to mind.

Regards

There sure are--some even have sand and other additions that can make a mess of any knife.
Use common sense (I guess). If it ruins your knife, don't do it. If it just dulls it, sharpen.

Im not shy with any of my knives. I have some more expensive than the sebbie and I use those too. Life is too short to just look at pretty knives!

It isn't like it is going to appreciate and make you a bunch of money someday.

I cut rope, slice kindling wood to start fires, open tin cans and threaten wild animals on a regular basis with my large Sebenza. And yeah sometimes I cut up cardboard.

I don't think the Sebenza is the best at holding an edge but it seems to take one OK on a Spyderco 8" ceramic sharpening stone. I use the medium grit followed by the fine and it is better looking and sharper than new when I finish. In the field I use the Spyderco double stuff sharpener.

I like the Sebenza serrations better than any other design because you can sharpen the tips of the teeth along with the rest of the blade. Then I go back and get the troughs with a DMT fine diamond taper doufold sharpener and it does a very nice job.

The Sebbie IS meant to work, so USE it!!Besides, how else are you going to gain greater appreciation for such an amazing knife, if you do not use it?! I do use knives that are more expensive than my Sebbie also.

After reading all the stories about how much loyal Sebenza knife owners hack away with their knives (well maybe not "hack") I also use my knife everyday whenever I need to do a cutting job. They are great knives and despite being expensive, I look beyond that and I just use them without a second thought. If after a while my Sebenza gets tattered and disgusting, I'm glad that Chris Reeve and Co. will get my knife shiny and new again.

Use it before you lose it ...in so many ways

OK, I have used my small micarta for :
1. steak (I was starving and I broke my plastic knife)
2. envelopes
3. magazine cut out
4. cardboard
5. those hard plastic molded packaging for my Inova LED

The edge is still sharp as day 1 and I managed to touch it up after every use with a few passes on the white ceremic rods.

As for cardboards, let me tell you that the staff at Plaza Cutlery uses them to cut cardboards, lots of them. They love the knife and that's how they sold the micarta to me. They did not exaggerate their love for the Sebenza.

HTH,

Garage Boy, I think I'll start a home for scratched Sebenzas. I know how to use them and sharpen them ,so they'll be treated properly.!! a223cat can send me his for a start .
