I just picked up this large 21 and it is new.I know when new it can
take a little time to break in but when i close it there is a slight dragging
feel to it.
Does it seem like the lock is coming in to close to the other side of
the knife? I hope these pics come out.

Your pic is very small and hard to see but the lock does look like it's very close to the handle. The lock should engage about 50% to 60% of the blade tang. Can you get a better pic of the lock and tang engagement?

The stiff opening is normal. It will break in over time.

Your photo is too small for me to see the lockup on my computer, but lock engagement on a Sebenza is spec'd at 50-75%, and closer to 75% is better (more secure). Chris Reeve himself has said this.

I still think there should be a sticky with the title "Normal Lockup is 50-75%" because we get the question frequently.

Hard to say for certain, but looks to be on the far end of what's in spec to me. Looks to be at 75% at a minimum. I'd say close to 85% just by looking at the pic.. But even a slight angle can cause perception to stray from reality.

As a comparison, here is the lockup on my Umnumzaan. I'd say it is definitely in spec, and I believe due to the ceramic ball interface this model is usually the one on the further end (75%) of the lockup range.

To my eye by the pics (which may be at differing agles) it looks like your engagement is even later than in my Umnumzaan. I'm mainly going by the distance of the lockbar from the opposing scale.

Is this normal for a new blade? There is that scraping dragging feel to it when closing, just as i start to close it.

Here is another pic and man i need to clean my finger nails!

I think the lockup percentage is within spec. But if the lock is sticky and hard to disengage then you might have an issue. Keep trying to break it in for a week and see if it gets better. Otherwise you might have to send it in.

I just got this high end knife brand new and now i might have to pay postage and insurance to get it fixed.
At least i hear the cs is very good.

The lock up does look rather late but if there is no play in the blade then there is really no problems. If/when the blade does start to get a bit of play or the lock bar hits the off side scale then send it back for a fix up. CRK may want to have a look see any way so there is no harm in asking them.

The scraping/rough feeling will be the detent running over the blade. Just make sure there is no rubbish collected in there and give it a bit of time to wear in and smooth its self out before becoming concerned about it. :)

Sometimes the QC is not always perfect especially with high end knives. I had to send another high end knife back from another company and I also paid postage and insurance to get it there. I wish these companies would refund the postage, especially if we are paying a couple of hundred for these knives. I completely agree, there is no excuse for poor QC. If they are mass producing these knives and don't have time to provide 99% QC, then lower the price of the item or let the Taiwanese do the QC. I heard they have the best QC for spyderco knives.

The second picture was taken from one side rather than from straight above. The first pic looks in-spec. See what CRK says...

They are probably going to tell you to just send it in. CRK will take care of you, even if it means putting in a new blade to make it right.

It is good that you e-mailed Heather a picture so they can take a look at it. It is always a hassle to mail it back (usually a week to get there) and then you have to wait your turn to get it checked out and then a week in transit to get it back. But one thing for sure you have nothing to worry about because they will take care of you. You just hate to buy something and then send it back.

Wow Heather got back to me very fast! I guess my eyes are not so good but the best news is the knife is fine. I will keep it for a week or so and if i don't like it i will
put it up on the exchange. Its a large 21 in S35VN with double lugs. Here is Heathers email to me.

Aaron,

I’m sorry you are disappointed with your knife. Have you tried returning it to the place where you purchased it? Judging by your photos, the lock looks entirely within our specs (50-75% coverage). As for the dragging, I’m not sure what is going on there. You may want to send it to us for a look. I have attached instructions for your convenience. Please let me know what you decide or if you need further information.
Best regards,

Heather
