I just finished cutting up all the holiday boxes for recycling. With all the talk about the heat treat on this thing, I didn't expect it to hold up.
It did very well IMO. Just a quick touch up on the paper wheel and voila, good as new!

I'm a crk fan for good!

 Nice Job
Star-Benza! Patiently waiting for mine to arrive... Hopefully tomorrow.

I really thought there was something wrong with my Nyala, too.

I used it deer hunting, and carried it for about a week. Used it to dress a mid-sized doe, even splitting the sternum and pelvis.

The damn thing would still shave afterward. With all this talk about how crappy the heat treat is, I was assuming the blade would melt as soon as it touched meat. I guess I'll have to live with it's excellent performance...

It isn't just the heat treat that's junk. Everyone knows the S35VN steel is worthless to start with. Basically only useful for spreading butter, and even then only if you thaw it first.

Right???

I widened my bevel and whittled wood and STILL no roll or chip.
Something must be wrong with mine too.

Nice job on the recycling. Why were you surprised about edge retention? I haven't heard of any heat treat issues with CRKs. When the very first batch of S30v's came out years ago, there was a short period where chipping of the edge was observed and that may have been related to a heat treat issue or just a chemistry error. Is that your concern? Anyhow if your knife is current with S30 or S35, you should have no issues with edge retention.

??? Really? Junk huh? Maybe I should sell all my Sebenza's then? And I thought they performed great for me. Haven't had issues. Maybe I'm doing it wrong?

Oh, yeah, for sure. There was some guy who posted here and at Spyderco Forums about how bad this steel and his CRK knives were. Rumor has it he's retired young and rich from his YouTube views. :( :thumbdn: But maybe that was all he ever wanted from his posts...

I'll keep all my junk CRKs thank you very much! :D

I did the same thing with my large Insingo, I wish that I would've snapped a pic but it was 12 degrees outside and I was trying to hurry. Just in case you're wondering it was still crazy sharp when I was done cutting up the boxes from 4 parties where family and friends brought gifts to my 3 kids- lots of boxes, and I loved every minute of it.
The cold had no effect on edge retention, no chips, no rolling of the edge.

In the beginning of S35VN I did get 2 CRK's that didn't hold an edge worth a damn( dulled from cutting my finger nails ), I said it then and I have no problem repeating it. I was so put off that for a little while I only searched for S30V models but this Large Insingo proved to me that those were flukes and I've since had great luck-as to be expected- with otherS35VN CRK's.

If anybody reading this is still wondering about it from old threads or bad rumors please rest at ease, it's GREAT stuff!

I remember the video - and that entire thread on the Spyderco forums from beginning to end. It was when the Native5 came out, everyone loved the knife and then that. I can't imagine how much of a headache that caused for Spyderco and probably CRK. Through all of that Sal never showed his feathers were ruffled (that I can remember anyway) he handled the situation like the gentleman he is. I imagine behind the scenes he must have wanted to throttle that guy.

I bought a Sebenza S35v back in June. Since then I've used it to cut cardboard, skin deer, skin a deer head( lot of bone contact), and a lot of other misc stuff. It still has the factory edge and still shaves arm hair. I maintain the edge using a strop. I had an opposite experience with an Umnumzaan S35v blade, but that could have been due to the edge being thinned too much( my fault)
