OK, I'm an ignoramus. But what the H... is the deal with a Sebenza knife? A lot of guys are knutty for them and I haven't a clue what these knives are all about. What is so special about them?

Thanks for the effort. I was being lazy and could have gotten a swat for it. Lesson here is do my research and don't ask for my corners to be cut.

upnorth is lucky... if the Sebenza knuts saw his post he would
have been left crying in the corner rocking back and forth
repeating "Sebenza my precious... Sebenza my precious..." ad infinitum.
;) :D

we saw it, and were cutting the new guy a break.

It won't happen again! ;)

The Sebenza is a very well-made knife of excellent materials and a general-purpose design....

...backed by an outstanding warranty and produced by a great guy.

Now, all that said....they're not the be all end all of the knife world. The rabid fandom does tend to get tiresome.

Hey, I'M a Sebenza knut and a rabid fan! :D

If we made a sticky of all the threads that asked "Why is the Sebenza ... ?" or " Which is better, the Sebenza or ... ?" he would be reading nothing else for the next few months. This way he can start off with real information.

MrMojoRising, thank you. You added two truly important points. And not just a great guy, but a great organization that reflects his attitude, also.

While Chris Reeve Knives gets so much publicity for the Sebenza, new guys should look into his other knives, as well: the Mnandi, the One-Piece fixed blades, and the Harsey collaborations.

Never have owned a Sebenza, but Chris Reeve knives in general are top notch!! I've got many of his fixed blades, and had a Mnandi folder at one time that was awesome.

Esav makes another great point, check out the Mnandi its a fav of mine. I dont carry it often but the whole knife looks and feels great to me. They are just sweet little knives:thumbup:

I'm a relative newcomer to Sebenzas, but I already appreciate them for what they are. Maybe like you, I tried and tried to justify spending $300 - $500 on a production folder. I kept going over in my mind how many upper-end Spydercos I could buy for the same money. And while I am a big Spyderco fan, they tend to be wide and fill the pocket considerably. Of course, the opening hole is much of the reason for the width.

Anyway, I was ordering a couple knives one day and while talking to the guy on the other end of the phone, out-of-the-blue it just popped out....I said "and add a Sebenza to that order." Damn...I was now committed to the purchase. I haven't regretted it!

The Sebenza is a simple knife made from absolute top-shelf materials. It is strong, has a nice profile and rides in my pocket nearly un-noticed. Additionally, it is backed by a company that apparently believes in serving their customer...even after the sale. I have talked to several folks at CRK on the telephone and by email and they have always gone out of their way to help me. One of the questions I had concerned the HT on the TI lock face. After talking to Heather, she had one of the guys in the shop call me and go over the process with me. I appreciated that very much.

Is it worth the money? It is to most folks that buy one. In fact, most folks that buy one seem to buy more...and more...and more....etc.

It is certainly legitimate for you to ask about the Sebenza....I remember when I wanted to know too.

Good luck as you roll the Sebenza over in you mind....just a warning, if you think about it too much, you'll probably end up with one.

:)

OK- y'all have convinced me that I need to add a Sebenza to my CRK holdings. Maybe I'll make it the end-all edc and can pass it on to my grandkids....

plowboy..nice reply too often a brand fan will go over board in responce often confusing fact with passion.
I feel pretty strong about a couple of brands and a couple of custom makers but I think you have to offer others some sane reason why you got to think like that. Be glad someone asks new interests are how the makers can keep going.

my classic micarta sebenza with double thumb studs diverted the funds from becoming a gold member(along with many others):D

I am going to say it like this...

-The Sebenza is not the first high end folder one buys. Usually they buy Kershaw, Spyderco, Benchmade, Buck, Microtech, etc. while wondering how people can pay so much for a relatively plain looking knife. Only after handing it do they purchase the knife, as nothing else really compares.
-The Sebenza is a knife that is liked more with time, and not less as unlike other knives on the market, this knife retains its tolerances even with heavy usage.
-The Sebenza is usually the last production folder one buys, and is often the knife that goes in your pocket, and not in your case.

Why do I spend $200 on a pair of Red Wing boots? Or $400 on a Dewalt drill? Or $200 on a Surefire? Am I crazy? Well yes, but that is besides the point. Sure, you can get a pair of Payless boots for $20, a cheap drill for $15, and a Rayovac flashlight for less than $1. Heck, at Walmart you can get a pocket knife for ninety six cents, tax included! So why spend oodles of money more? In the end, it is a balance of things. The first is obviously the pride in ownership. Other people will see what you have, but that isn't why I personally buy high end stuff. I buy because I know I have the tools which will serve me best, which is personal confidence in my goods and the ability to get the jobs at hand done. The other is obviously quality. Many people simply like to have the best, or at least better.

In order to reckon the Sebenza, one has to see it in person, and carry it for a bit.

OK, I received my first Sebenza yesterday. It is a small Classic with Unique Graphic and Hematite inlay. The knife is beautiful. It is light and sits well in my pocket, can hardly tell I'm carrying it. The fit and finish is superb. The blade opens/closes with very little effort and is very smooth. Absolutely no blade play whatsoever, at least from what I can detect. I am very happy with the knife. Now...I have some other production folders that I am very impressed with as well. Is the Sebenza worth the money? The fit, finish and operation is flawless, the Unique Design is beautiful but for the "extra quality" I think that is going to be up to each individual. It didn't knock me off my feet. From all of the postings I guess I was expecting the "Excalibur" of production folders. With the Unique Graphic and stone inlay I will say that yes, that justifies a higher price because it is "one of a kind". It is definitely a high quality knife and I will be keeping it. I am thinking about getting just "one more" but a large model. Things one needs to keep in mind when they are considering purchasing a Sebbie is whether you are buying it because "you" want to have a high quality knife, you want to impress other people, you are buying one because the Sebanites say it's the best knife or you are collecting. I will advise anyone who is considering on whether or not to buy one to do as I did and purchase a used one before laying out the big bucks for a new one and justify for yourself whether they are worth it or not. If you can't purchase a used one, try and find a knife purveyor near you and handle one for yourself. I will buy a large model so that I have one of each (and I do plan on using them) but I don't see myself collecting them. To each their own.
