Sebenza thoughts?

I am considering the purchase of a small sebenza. I currently have about 35 spydercos and 5 benchmade knives. Can I get some input and opinions about the sebenza before I make up my mind on the purchase? Thanks guys.

My thought is go for it. I've had one for more than a year now, and it's one of my favorite knives.

If you're really not sure, buy one in the exchange forums and if you decide you don't like it you should be able to resell it and recoup what you put into it.

I have a large sebenza. The reason I got it because so many people talk about it, so i got curious. The end, for me, I like my RRF better. RRF is about the same size of small sebenza, same material as well. I feel RRF has more character, more design. Sebenza is a bit plain.

Personal opinion applies. Not saying Sebenza isn't a good knife, but it is too expansive now i think about it.

For my opinion, Benchmade & Spyerco price are a good knife suppose to be; RRF is worth the extra money for its design and a awsome knife. As for sebenza, its an awsome expansive knife.

If I could make my choice again, I rather spend my money on William Henry than a sebenza.

Its one of the best engineered folders on the market. Chris does a great job with them. I'm sure you'll love the folder.

been a while since there's been a "should I buy a Sebenza" thread or something like it. Alot of people will say there not worth the money, and its my opinion if you ahve to justify it than your probably not gonna get one or if you do you might wonder why it costs so much. Theres a bunch of other knives that will cut just as well and might feel better in your hand. But if you can afford it and you want it. Buy it you wont be dissapointed and if you are there's lots of people who will take it off your hands. I own 5 and I love them all. There fit and finish is outstanding and the customer service that CRK comes with is great. The sebenza is a fantastic cutter/slicer I like the classic blade style the most. It holds its edge very well being s30V unless you get an old bg42 or an older ATS34 I belive. They get nasty nasty sharp too. But like I said you will find other folders that maybe arent as nice or that are close that cost half as much but dont let it sit in your mind forever if you really want one GET ONE.

You will never own a better folding knife. Yeah, it's plain, but it works. Every detail is just about perfect, and any service you may need from CRK is exceptional (that's part of what you pay for, too). Smoot, perfect tolerances...it's just the best. If any knife in the world is overpriced, it's a William Henry. You can get a one-of-a-kind piece from a custom maker for less than their factory knives.

I just got my Sebenza in the mail a few minutes ago (Large, Classic). I obviously haven't got to use it much yet, but I haven't been able to find anything about it that isn't perfect. I also own a Manix, Skirmish, and SERE 2000, which is darn good knives too, but the Sebenza has noticably better fit and finish. The edge is perfect.

Is the Sebenza worth the money? That's up to you. There are many other production folders that are much better deals (including the three I named above), but if you want a Sebenza, well, you have to pay for it.

Like said above, if you have to wonder whether it is worth it or not, then maybe it isn't for you and you should seek a great bang for the buck knife like a Mini Skirmish. But if you want a Sebenza, well, you have been bitten by the bug and it will not go away until you get one.

I guess the good news is that if you buy one and later feel it isn't for you, you can resell it and not lose much money.

Keep in mind that the Sebenza is considered the production folder that all others are compared to for a reason. It isn't the "best" to everyone, but it is the standard. Is a Ferrari worth so much money when a Corvette will outperform it for less than half the price? And in this case, the less expensive knives don't actually outperform the Sebenza, so yes, I think you can reason that it is as worth it as a Ferrari, Gucci handbag, Rolex watch etc...

I haven't handled any high-end custom knives, such as the Lochsa, which is considered to be better than the Sebenza by many. And I admit that in the short time I have handled my Sebenza I have not heard a chorus of angels. There was no light down from heaven when I opened the box. It's just a knife.

But it is a damn good one. The standard for which all production folders are compared to. Whether it is the best production folder or not is a matter of opinion, as is whether it is worth the price or not.

I own four Sebbies. Only problem I have is that if carried in the same pocket with change, a small coin can get lodged between the blade and the thick Ti handle... sometimes tightly. Doesn;t seem to be a problem with my other folders.

Nonetheless it is a favorite carry and few things are guaranteed to make me smile more than when I finish up my large Seb on that EdgePro polishing tape and shave off a few arm hairs. Many hairs jump off ahead of the blade in fear.

Sure sign of someone who has not driven a Ferrari.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts. With all the positive feedback I guess I will be making that purchase. I appreciate your time.

I had the opportunity to fondle a Sebenza in the pass-around forum.

I would not argue about terms such as 'handsome' and 'quality-built', but I bought a Strider SMF instead. I simply preferred the size and ergonomics of the SMF better than Sebenza.

One strong feature of Sebbies is their resale value - if you don't like it, you'll lose little in resale (with either knife).

Hope this helps!

If you got the "dough" then it would be a step up from Spydies and BM. I think the BM mini-skirmish is close enough for me....

I guess it depends upon what you value in a folder.

If you value a folder mostly for its ability to cut things, then you will probably be disappointed considering the price.

After all, you stated that you have about 35 Spydercos, and they are some of the very best cutters in the industry, bar none.

Allen.

No I haven't, but you didn't understand my point.

I am a big Ferrari fan and have heard (and believe) that the beauty of owning and driving a Ferrari goes beyond objective performance.

I was comparing that to the Sebenza versus less expensive knives that perform as well.

I own a Sebenza, so I likewise understand the worth of Ferrari, Rolex etc... Though I cannot afford a Ferrari and not into watches.

Barker- One thing I have left out is that many people say that to appreciate the Sebenza, you need to own it for a while and really use it. Like I said, I didn't hear a chorus of angels the first time I opened the Sebenza, and was a little underwhelmed. And most agree it is plain (though classy) looking. But I hear that the more you use a Sebenza, the more you love it. It is a companion. An analogy would be a plain girl that isn't wild in bed, but that you want to marry, versus a hot girl that is wild in bed but not your soul mate.

I haven't experienced it myself yet as I just got my Sebenza, but reasons for this are usually that the Sebenza handle, though not ergonomic in any one grip, will allow for a wide variety of grips and chores, that the Sebenza is very easy to take apart and clean, making a good work knife since you won't fear getting it messy, that the perfect fit and finish rub off on you and that other knives start to see "cheap" in comparison, and CRK's great refurbishing options, so you won't be afriad to use your Sebenza hard, and lastly the pride of ownership, as having a Sebenza in your pocket can give you a feeling that a SERE 2000 in your pocket cannot give... even if that is irrational.

Well, I ordered my small classic left handed sebenza with dual thumbstuds last night. I went back and forth between the regular and the classic but I finally found a lefty classic. I am somewhat ambidextrous so I wanted the dual thumbstuds. I got lucky finding that set up. Anyway I'll let you guys know what I think when it comes in. Thanks again for all the input.

Barker - congrats. I am eagerly awaiting my order for the Sere 2K and Benchmade 710HS. Maybe someday I will graduate to the Sebenza. But right now those knives should make me happy. ;)

Hair - pix please! :D
