Sebenza value?

I have carried and used my Sebenza nearly everyday for 5 years. Alternated a few others in now and then, but mainly the Sebenza is it. Actually works better now than when it was new. Scuffed a little but who gives a ****, it's a user and a steady, reliable one during that time. Issues? ZERO. It's easy to say that it is not "worth" the price unless your qualified to say otherwise. I say otherwise. So I basically have gotten to carry and use one of the finest knives on the planet for the past 5 years for a measly $5 a MONTH! Spells bargain to me. You can easily loose 10 times that amount searching, finding and buying production folders that "are a better value" and then deciding you haven't found ****.

THAT'S what I've been saying all-along...The 'Benza is overpriced. For the price of one Sebenza, I can have 3 excellent Benchmade folders!

Yeah, you sure could, but for how long. As a matter of fact I sold 3 Benchmades to get my Sebenza. All at a considerable loss. See, there's that "better value" issue again.

It'll be raining sh!t when I spend over 300 bucks for a framelock...

Regarding the Sebenza: Very few things in life are truly "overpriced". It is simply a matter of how much money you have to spend. If you easily have it to spend, and you want the item, it is no longer overpriced.

I remember when a $50.00 knife seemed overpriced to me. Times have changed and income has changed. Now a Sebenza is not overpriced to me.

If some people don't want to spend $300 for a framelock, then don't buy a Sebenza. Buy something else. No one cares. We have choices. Maybe a Sebenza is not "worth it to you" if you cannot comfortably afford it. Lots of things are not within my budget but that certainly doesn't mean they are "overpriced". It just means I don't want it bad enough or I cannot afford it. Pretty simple to me.

I have owned and used several Sebenzas, and I carry one almost everyday. I also have several $500 knives that I use and carry. Back to the case in point. Beauty is the eye of the beholder sort-a-speak, and to me $300 value for a seb is great.

Blademan 13 hit the nail on the head about value. I have carried and used a Terzuola ATCF for about 2 years that cost me about $500. That is less than a dollar a day if I justify carrying an expensive knife. So for me, the Seb is a great value for about $.57 a day.

When you buy a Sebenza; you buy it for life. ;)
Nah, had mine a week but it's not my style:p

Great knife, superb craftsmanship and well worth the $230 I paid for it.

Just too 'plain' looking and I like my workhorse knives to look sleek and sexy like my women!!!!:D

Of course we have choices :) That's a good thing. This way I don't have to spend 300 bucks on something that's worth 100.

I don't want to spit on sebbies. They are very well thought out, and the craftmanship is remarkable. But 1) I don't like frame locks (my hand is in contact with them, and they can disengage when I twist the knife counterclockwise), and 2) I'm not ready to give 200 bucks to a guy for an hour of work, even if he's an awesome knifemaker like Mr. Reeves is.

I'm using Opinels as EDC. When they're broken, I throw them away. I don't have to care. I used 6 opinels (36 bucks) over the last 10 years. Do the maths :D

That's probably just me...

Cheers,

David

I sure bet that Mr. Reeves could build a knife in an hour

I think it's worth saying that when you buy a sebenza for $300, probably a good $100 is "profit" for the retailer. (Just a guess)

whatever wich profit Mr Reeve or the retailer make on a Sebenza,I'm still happy to pay 300$ for a Sebenza! I prefer to buy one good knife that will last a lifetime instead of 10 bad knives that I would have to replace when they break. For me a knife is a tool, bad tools or cheap tools tend to break when you need them most... I know a Sebenza will never fail when I need it.

One of the reasons I don't like Sebenzas is the fact they last forever. I need to convince myself that I must have a new carry knife every two weeks and if I kept my Sebenza I might not have purchased the last 100 EDC's !!!!!!!

Well.., I know one thing for sure :)..., Chris has one Hell of a marketing plan..., cause I've never seen so many threads about the value of one production knife.., and they are still selling...

I have to admit I wouldn't pay the retail price for a Sebe.., but simply because I just don't find the esthetics to my liking. Darn good knife though...

Back when I had a lot more disposable income, I bought my first sebenza, it was a large classic with a custom design. I had never handled a sebenza before. When I opened up the package it arrived in I was blown away. Up til that point in time I have several benchmades, spydercos, and every other production knife companies products in my collection. When I handled the sebenza it instantly made me think less of all my other knives. They seemed like toys in comparison to this precision machine. I traded that knife away, because I couldn't bring myself to use it. I went through the same thing with a CRK fixed blade. It was so impressive, I couldn't use it, and it made me feel like all of my other knives were merely toys in comparison. I traded for a small wood inlay sebenza when they first came out, because I was so impressed with the way they looked. I think that is the best value I have ever found in a knife. It is a heavy duty folder, a gents knife, and a precision cutter all at the same time. Out of the hundreds of knives I have carried, nothing has come close to bringing me the satisfaction that my small sebenza does. I have all but retired that knife now, I still wear it on special occasions. I am doomed to keep trying out new cutlery every chance I get, I couldn't stick with just one knife. But if I had too, my small wood inlay sebenza would be that one. Too me it was knife nirvana, so its value is priceless. No knife before or since has even come close to the level of perferction of that knife.

That is exactly how I feel about my small classic woodie!!! To me it's the absolute perfect knife. The best quality, a great EDC size and looks good enough for a dress knife. It's also an incredibly robust knife, one that I don't feel bad about using even though it is pretty and expensive. It's in my pocket every single day, every time I leave the house.

Amen and Hallelujah!

I still think they should make a sticky thread at the top of the general discusssion forum "Is the sebenza worth it?"

:p :p :p

The Sebenza is a great value for what you get, the question is whether you want to pay for what the Sebenza has to offer? To a lot of people those things aren't worth $300. But I haven't seen anyone able to replicate those features and quality for less than that price.

It really doesn't matter how many other good knives you can buy for the price of a Sebenza, because NONE of those knives is a Sebenza. I say the same thing when people question the value of an Emerson knife. I think Benchmades are a much better value than an Emerson, but if I want an Emerson.... I can't fill that void with a Benchmade ;)

I bought and promptly sold a plain Sebbie because I figured if I was going to pay that much for a knife I might as well spend a little more and get a fancy version. I just bought a woodie Classic. Is the woodie in any way a better knife than the plain version? Nope. So why'd I pay the ~$50 difference? Because I wanted a woodie and the plain Sebbie wasn't a woodie :)

Things would be pretty boring if everyone bought the "best value". We'd all be driving Toyota Camries, shooting Remington 870 shotguns, Savage rifles, Colt 1991A1 pistols, and carrying Griptillians or FRN Spydercos. Oh what a boring world it would be.

Olivier,

For such applications, I carry a fixed blade :D

Gadgets and stuff won't make you happy, and it won't make your life more exciting. You'll just be excited about your new toy for five minutes, then you'll need another toy to get the same thrill again... and again... and again.

I'm not judging you. If you like it that way, fine... :) You're an happy contributor to economic health ;)

Cheers,

870s, Colts and knives aren't gadgets to me. If I need a tool I prefer to buy the best quality I can afford at the time. I like 870s, Colts and Sebenzas. I wish I'd had one 40-some years ago instead of a Boy Scout knife. Heck, I just ordered another Sebenza so I can have clean shiny one for the days I don't want to carry the one I use to dig weeds and cut ivy in the yard. And there're deals out there too if you're patient and lucky with the small ones running $225 to $269. Some people blow that much a month on beer and cigarettes.

I couldn't always afford nice stuff, but now I can and let me tell you it's fun shooting a new $1600 Cooper .22 bolt. And I bought a CRK Mountaineer I at the gun show Saturday to replace the badly worn 6" Case XX I've had forever. They were having a real slow day at the show so I got it for a good price, too.

It's only money and you can't take it with you. :)

I remember when gas was 18.9 and pack of smokes was a quarter.

Sebenza...The knife everyone loves to hate.
Sebenza...Either you get it, or you don't.
Sebenza...If you don't like it, don't buy it.
