Apart from the obvious styling differences, how does the Speed-Tech stand up to the Sebenza. I already have a CRK knife so I am familiar with Chris reeves high quality. Does the Speed-Tech warrant all of the hype and it's high price?

I think the two are going after two distinct markets. As far as quality I have and have had both. I can not find a problem with either knife. In fact Speed Tech is better than Microtech in many regards.

I have both and prefer to carry my Speedtech "IPO" tanto over my Sebenza. I find it more comfortable to carry because it rests better in my pocket or waistband. Also its easier to operate because I can flick it open AND closed, which doesn't require placing my fingers in the blade path. And lastly the Speedtech handle is much more comfortable in my hand. The Speedtech does give up one thing to the Sebenza though. It isn't quite as sharp and doesn't hold it's edge quite as long. I would consider the worksmanship to be about equal in quality but for the money I would recommend Speedtech over Sebenza.

The quality of the Speedtech is first rate, if you are used to CRK you would be pleased with the knife. Very smooth action and terrific handle comfort along with excellent workmanship, I would say it is well worth the cost.

From what I hear, ol' Chris really knows how to heat-treat BG42. Speedtech is using 154CM, right? Ya, just checked their site. It's considered a small fraction better than ATS34 at best, identical at worst...heat-treat is similar, and by all accounts Speedtech does a good job. For daily carry and daily light utility the Speedtech is a lovely piece; if you're going to attack cardboard or other harsh stuff daily or close to it the 'Benza starts to look good as a "small sexy daily-carry piece".

Either way, you're buying from really good people...always a plus.

If I was limited to that size class, I'd buy a Speedtech I think. The moment they make a megafolder (or Chris Reeves does, for that matter) I'm *THERE*.

Actually, the Speedtech manufacturing process is well suited to making a Muskrat...basically two of the current model jammed back-to-back. Sure, it'd cost $500. So what? It'd be the finest compact folding fighter made, and the *ultimate* in 4" and below jurisdictions.

Ohhhh PLEASE?

Speed-Tech makes an EXCELLENT product. If you already have a Sebenza then by all means jump right in and get a Synergy.

SpeedTech is a first class knife making firm.
Fit, form and function at a price well worth the product! Jim is there when you need him for any questions you may have! The knife and customers speek for them selves.
We all have our own opinions and different needs, but the SpeedTech will fit the bill.

I am pondering which one to get myself. i am currently leaning towards the speed tech. But deciding which color and blade shape to get is a real bitch.

SpeedTech definitely falls into the same super-premium category as the Sebenza.

It does fall into the same toughness category but my vote would definitely go the the good ole SEBENZA................

I have both, just got the Speed-tech(Pewter) on Tuesday, and they are both very nice folders. If trying to choose I think I would get a Speed-tech(which I will again), they are very functional and not too bad on the eyes either. One other comment, I ordered mine on Friday at about 1:30 p.m. it was in the mail that afternoon and I got it 4 days later(probably would have had it on Monday except for the Holiday) you can't beat that.

Hey Y'all,
Where can I get a look at a Speed Tech on the Web?
Thanks

Jim, I have alvays belived that ATS-34 is vacuum melted and 154CM is not. Vacuum melted steels are cleaner = better. Is 154CM now a vacuum melted? If it is not the only thing that makes it "better" is that it is American steel. American = better - not true. If some product is made in USA it doesn't add value to other customers than hc american patriots.

Yes - I have problem with this 154CM trend as anyone that has read http://www.bladeforums.com/ubb/Forum32/HTML/002999.html know.

Sorry to bother this thread with a minor detail.

Tommi --

I completely agree with you that if people were switching from high-quality ATS-34 to low-quality 154CM strictly on the basis of 154CM being an American product, then that's a bad trend. However, I don't believe that is what is happening. The switch to 154CM came about in part because 154CM is now being manufactured using a high-quality producess, and it is vaccuum melted. It is at least the equal of ATS-34, *and* it is American.

I will try to get in touch with Crucible to confirm this. Meanwhile, since Microtech seems to have started the trend back to 154CM, perhaps someone can ask Tony Marfione to confirm this also.

I have a SpeedTech Synergy(Nandina)and a Tanto Sebenza. I love both of them. In fact, the toughest decision I make each morning is which one to carry (I know, I should carry both). If you have a Sebenza already and are looking for another premium production folder then get a Synergy. By the way, Jim at SpeedTech is a great guy. He'll walk you through the whole process, answer all of your questions, and get your knife in your hands very quickly.

although I do not yet own a Speed-Tech, I have to echo Art's comment that Jim is a great guy.

Also, if you are wondering, he has a great satisfaction guarantee that makes buying one of his knives a breeze.

by the way, I also own and like Sebbies!

I have both the small, Sebenza and the slim, Synergy. The workmanship on both is superb, with no visible flaws.
I agree with the posts about Jim O'Young being a great guy to do business with and he will get you the Synergy as quick as possible. And he will answer questions PROMPTLY, which means a lot to me.
I think that the best looking of the two is the Synergy and it feels better in the hand. I have not used the Synergy long enough to compare it with the Sebenza yet.
Both are great knives, I initially intended to carry the Sebenza one week and the Speed-tech the next...I never did think I would find a folder that had a lock-up as strong as the Sebenza, but the Speed-tech lock-up is every bit as strong IMHO, perhaps even stronger!
Right now, I can't say which one I prefer, but I'm leaning toward the Speed tech!!

Good to hear these opinions about the Synergy. I already decided to get one, but as Shootist I have problem picking a color. Sometimes too much choice is a bitch.

What colors or patterns did you pick?
