I just received two sebenzas with BG42 steel and the first thing that I noticed is how razor sharp the edge feels. Can someone educate me on the pros and cons of BG42 on a sebbie, I know the RC 60-61, Thanks.

Pros: You gotcha some premium seller pieces there dude. Folks froth at the mouth over these Sebs. Open wallet syndrome.

Cons: They need to remain safe queens. Seriously. If you want a user get a more recent Seb. Save these for resale. Collectors will go ape over 'em.

So there you have it. You got some great Sebs but the "business man" part of your conscience can't use them as they were intended to be used. I have some vintage Spydies that fall into the same category. Cheers.

Respectfully disagree. The BG-42s are grrrreat users. They hold their edge longer IMHE than the S30V, but conversely take a little longer to sharpen up. Hint: don't let them get dull, touch them up as often as needed. Big  on those - use them, they were meant to be used and you'll never know how good they are if you don't.

Really? I guess I'm doing something wrong. My BG-42, Annual LE, Left Hand is EDC'd regularly. The horror! :D

I'm sure many might keep it safe queen, but I hope you can bring yourself to use it good!

use it good, or give it to me:p i missed out on some bg-42's earlier on and i wish i hadn't. i want to play with this steel :(

i can't really think of any knife i'd want to safe queen. even if it had mammoth bark with some super star metal, it would be yearning to be used, then passed on to my kids.

I have one in the rotation, and for getting a razor edge it's a little better than S30V ( or S35VN) IMO. The newer steels "seem" to be a little easier to sharpen with similar media. Oh, BG's are worth more to collectors :D

BG-42's are going close to $600 somedays.......lol. Somedays, a little less. I got some pretty good deals on mine, but in 10 years of buying CRK, your bound to get a few deals now and then. I have used both BG-42 and S30V ( S30V a lot more ). Both performed and both hold a razor edge, but I would like others have said give a slight edge to BG-42.

It all depends on usage. Did you buy it to use or as a investment or safe queen.....? I say use it and enjoy it. By saying your going to use it doesn't mean its going to get all beat up and abused. Get a Sheath for it and use it sparingly, or use the heck out of it. If you bought it as a user, it doesn't really matter what steel it has does it....?

IMO BG-42 is "better" than the S30V blades and probably "better" than the new S35VN blades too. My EDC Sebenza is a BG-42 regular and the performance is great in my experience. I think this is down to it being a little harder more than anything else, but for me it defo. seems to take a finer, crisper feeling edge. If given the choice I would take BG-42 over the other steels offered every time....well, maybe not damascus but you know what I mean. :)

I found this forum via the fine folks over at CRK. I just got my first small sebenza in a trade, and had them look it over.
It has BG42 steel, and I've never owned a knife so sharp. I'm half afraid to use it, it doesn't really fit my hands. Thinking about putting this one away, and getting a large sebenza.
Those are great people over there, not sure why I waited so long?

Welcome to Bladeforums! I no longer have my 2 small Sebenzas, I kept the large.

Both of mine are BG-42, a regular and a tanto. Both are heavily used, the regular only by me, the tanto by a few owners before me. I have resharpened both, lately freehand with diamond and ceramic stones, to a convex secondary edge. I really can't see Sebenzas as safe queens unless your collection is so extensive you just don't have a place they would fill in the rotation.

All I know is that the edge feels different, it feels more like a razor. Thank You all for your input, I really appreciate it.

I have large sebenzas with ATS-34, BG-42, S30V, S35VN. The edges feel different in them all.

The ATS-34 is on my Large P Sebenza and it is deeply hollow ground and feels..... light....? The edge feels different like you said.

The BG-42 you can feel its heavier and like you said, its razor-like and definitely feel different. It could just be the higher angle grind.

The S30V is very similar to the BG-42, but there is a slight difference. I don't think it gets as sharp as the BG-42, but it is easier to sharpen I feel.

The S35VN is a 21 and I haven't used it really other than paper test and envelopes. The edges on all my other sebenza kinda feels like the whole blade is the edge is that makes any sense, while the S35VN feels like the edge is just where it is, the edge and the rest of the blade is attached to it. Its a different feeling, but it is a 21, the others ( minus the P ) are regulars.

The evolution of CRK........amazing...!!!

Good summary...all good, though different.

This is the one BG-42 I'm never going to use, the Historical Significance is too high. Can't wait to receive it, days feel like weeks.

So YOUR The one........lol. That was a beauty, just too rich for me. Looking forward to pics. For that price, I would not use it either....lol.

Congrats on the incoming Annual.

There was some heated bidding on that one.

Hi there fellow Sebenza heads, I recently purchased a Large Regular Seb with Bg-42 with the intention of having the blade retumbled by CRK. I was surprised to find out that BG-42 is so brittle that CRK will not guarantee that they can remove the thumb stud without the blade cracking which they told me often happens with BG-42. I was shocked. Keep this in mind when purchasing
