Sebenzas and Wegners

I was sitting comfortably one morning in my usual place where I think my deepest thoughts (the can) contemplating my Wegner Jr. Yes, it still opens smoothly. Yes, I still love this knife but...and then the thought struck...Sebenza. Yes...Sebenza.

Hmmmmm. So, yeah, I ordered one. And then I noticed in another thread someone mentioned the Wegner and Sebenza in the same breath and it all fell into cosmic order. YES. So similar, so...so...ME. I realized I must be of a TYPE. I'm the type of knife guy that loves the Wegner. Yeah, I carried the miniAFCK for awhile but...it just didn't do it for me. The Wegner was my kind of knife. And I'm theorizing (is that a word?) now that the Wegner led me to the realization that I need a supercharged Wegner, i.e., a Sebenza. If Wegner is good, then Sebenza must me Nirvana (not the rock group, though).

Anyway...(geez am I still typing this thing?--what was my point...?)...oh yeah...my question: How many Sebenza owners out there were also previous Wegner owners? I'm guessing that there must be a high correlation. That the same type of person that is attracted to the Sebenza must have been--at a previous time--strongly attracted to the Wegner. Whaddya think?

Hoodoo, I have been contemplating this comparison ever since I held my first large Sebenza (ok, since yesterday). I think it's a logical comparison. My large Wegner has been a favorite user of mine for quite a while now. The blade geometry, handle ergonomics, and typical Spyderco high quality make the Wegner a favorite. Add to that the "Whack!" of the blade snapping into locked position, and you've got a heck of a knife. Now...whip out the syringe, fill it full of anabolics, and shoot it into the Wegner. Stand back. Notice the G10 getting kind of grey? The trademark Spydie hole morphing into a razor sharp BG42 blade? Whoops! That liner lock just evolved into the Intergral Lock! Notice that the thumb serrations on the spine remained, but tightened up as a group. Interesting...

Sebenza=Wegner-on-steroids?

Right now, I'm on Lortab 7.5gr for a neck/shoulder injury.

What are you guys on?

So, does this mean that because I love my Wegner, I'll eventually break down and get a Sebenza? Hmmm....NOT!!

They are two different animals. Sure the blade shape is kinda/sorta similar, I suppose, but to "graduate" from the Wegner to the Sebbie? That's not always possible for many folk.
The handle grips are worlds apart from each other, IMO.
Personally, I like the feel of the Wegner, but, dislike the feel of the current production model Sebbie. And, OY!, the price!

But, then again, I suppose if a person follows what seems to be the natural progression in knife addiction from less expensive, fair to good quality knives to more expensive and excellent quality knives then this thing would hold water.
Interesting...

Hoodoo,

I've been having similar thoughts. I recently picked up a Wenger Jr. and compared it to my Sebenza; the blades are basically the same- except for the spine and the Spyderco hole.

It got me thinking- what would be my ideal daily carry knife? I would want the Wenger Jr. blade in BG-42 or Talonite (the Spyderco hole would be enlarged)and the handle based on the Sebenza with the bar lock (handle in titanium, of course). The clip would have to be redesigned to make room for the lock.

I just ordered a Wenger Jr. (Thanks, Mark) for my Uncle, who is taking a trip around the world. The size, quality and durability should serve him well, at a cost that won't kill me if he has it lost or stolen. It is a shame they are going out of production, they are an excellent value.

I have figured out a way to deal with the price problem. First of all, here in Michigan, we have a 10 cent charge on pop and beer cans and bottles. I've been drinking a lot of diet pop lately. I find this a very effective mechanism for the delivery of caffeine. Anyway, I've accumulated a lot of cans... Also, the more times I have poker night at my place, the more cans and bottles I accumulate (it also helps if I win on poker night so I plan to start winning).

Second, I haven't taken my nickles, dimes and quarters to the bank for over a year. I know there is some serious money in my change can. I just have to find someone to count it for me. The bank always seems reluctant...

Third, I divide the cost of the knife by the number of months it takes to get the knife, and if I don't make any other purchases during that time (except for that $50 Quartermaster's Kukri I saw the other day in "Kinive You Gotta Have Illustrated"), I will not exceed my monthly knife budget.

There. It's all so simple. Loose change, a few cans, and some lady luck and Presto!, I [will] have a new sebby, assuming I don't crash and kill my self in this snowstorm that is heading this way today.

I would love this knife but I would make one change. I would make it an Axis lock. I swore off buying liner locks and the only reason I order the sebby is that I know the lockup is adjustable, but I dig the axis lock. I'm just waiting for BM to put a blade on one I really like. I have the 705, carried it for awhile (I sill keep it in my coat pocket), but I always come back to the Wegner Jr 'cause I prefer its blade geometry.

To put it another way, if CRK made an axis lock sebby (and since I'm wishing, put a spydie hole in it

), I would be ordering another one. Right now I'm waiting to see what Spyderco has up their sleeves for a new lock. I wonder when that will finally be unveiled?

I think that the Wegner is a good argument that a premium quality production knife doesn't have to cost a fortune. I can't wait to see what you have to say about the forthcoming, revised and rethought "Super Wegner"! That's truly going to be a C48 on steroids!

If a higher end Wegner is what you're craving, contact http://www.blade-tech.com about the Phil Boguszewski custom Ti handled Pro Hunter. About the same price as a new large Sebenza.

Amazing...my two favorite knives are the Wegner Jr. and the small Sebenza! Looks like somebody else has come to the same conclusion. I posted awhile back on Spyderco forum asking for additions to the Wegner Jr. that would make it more like the Sebenza...nobody caught on, but I would still like to see the Wegner Jr. beefed up. It would then catch up to the Sebenza in my favorite category. Certainly, the Wegner has the best ergonomics and the Sebenza has the best quality/materials. I may have to quit dreaming and design/make my own...

I guess I should start having poker night at my house as your idea has merit, in an offbeat sorta way!

I guess I could also walk the highway collecting cans, too.

DL,
You-da-man!!
Now, THAT, my friend is a KNIFE!!
Make one with an Axis Lock to and all bases are covered, and my wallet will be much lighter and more dusty from lack of use.
