I've owned 6 CRKs and sold them all except the Zaan. I only own the Zaan because I like the way it looks and it does offer a bit of CRK innovation that I like, but it hardly gets used. I much prefer the ZTs over CRKs. Chris Reeve is riding a lot on the brand, fame, and fans. Sebenza quality is undeniable, but let's face it in terms of user knives either brand is fine. If budget constrain is a factor then ZT. ZT's manufacturing capabilities and quality is top notch. They have been stepping up their game year after year. Sure it doesn't have CRK tolerances, but realistically it really isn't all that important. It's that extra step that the snobbier folks like. M390 and Elmax is a step up from S35VN at the softer heat treat. I love my Elmax on my 0801 and the M390 on my 0777. The whole softer heat treat so it's easier to sharpen thing is just bs. S35VN at higher RC isn't hard to sharpen, Chris just wants his machines to last longer. Save a buck and get a ZT for now then pick up an used CRK later to judge for yourself on their worth. I've owned half a dozen, and none of them impressed me. Do I appreciate them for the small touches of details that's put in? absolutely, but acquiring them too early won't help you appreciate them. Acquiring them later, might make you realize that you've been missing out or that they're not as special as you once thought because other companies are definitely stepping up. Hope that helps.
