sebs vs strider

I own 3 quality folders; a large S30V regular Sebenza, a Model 2 spearpoint SnG and a 2003 AR. They all have different purposes. I love my Sebenza, I love my Striders. I don't compare the two brands. Different knives for different times and places.

Be aware that some might consider your starting this thread a little 'trollish'...

As far as I can tell - only certain fanatics on one side of the equation feel this way. If someone were to post Benchmade vs. Spyderco? (A thread which occurs virtually every day), I don't see anyone calling those threads "trollish".

Ok, back to topic. Aperna - since Strider regularly produces only one folding "framelock" design - I assume you would be comparing the SnG to a Sebenza.

This subject has been discussed many times. Run a search on "SnG: and "Sebenza" and you will find many responses - including my own.

To summarize - some find the SnG is sexier. It also offers a couple of highly useful and different blade shapes. The Sebenza has a long history of superior performance and a more sophisticated pivot system. I have never driven either of these knives to their limit, so, I can't say much about how they perform at "extreme" tasks.

I like the SnG clip better. I like the finger choil. I like the thumbhole better than a stud. I would prefer an SnG with two ti slabs rather than the G-10, just a preference. The SnG costs $60 + more. Hard choice in my book.

I own over a dozen sebs not including my fixed blade models so needless to say I'm a true and loyal fan of there design, function and sales staff. The reason that I was interested in peoples response to the strider folders especialy the sng model was that I noticed a similarity between the two relating to the integral locking
mechanism. It's also apparent to me that the sebenzas are esthetically more appealing due there sleek lines and meticulous fit and finish. I also noticed that there are numerous complaints about the strider folders on the USN forum regarding there fit and mechanism.

Although I am new to this forum, I'm not sure of the meaning "trollish", but I can assure you that I did not start this thread to draw a line in the sand between seb and strider fans.

There is one other point I like to make. When there comes a time when people cannot critique the work of any individual in a friendly and respectful manner on this or any other forum then I will simple refuse to participate.

Welcome and I wouldn't worry about the "trollish" thing. We get some jerks who like to stir up trouble on BFC from time to time so some folks get a little nervous when they see even the slightest hint of such behavior. However, Mr. Little was probably just handing out a piece of friendly and innocuous advice. BTW,. twelve's a lot of Sebbies for one person to have, so if you ever feel overburdened I'll be glad to take a couple or three off your hands. Again welcome and I hope you enjoy BFC.

Thanks for your gracious reply.I usually try to keep a healthy perspective about everything in life especially my trivial hobbies.
By the way, I couldn't help but notice that when I explored the archives regarding this subject MR LO LIttle was right in the middle of the discussion!

trane fan, you interpreted my motive correctly.

APerna, I meant no offense. None whatsoever. I'm curious, what is your 'screen name' over in the USN forum?

the sebenzas are esthetically more appealing

Really ? I find the SNG to be sexier; reminds me of Lara Croft. Beauty in tactical situation. :D

I'm a big fan of CRK, one of my EDC is a small EDC that's close to 10 years old. It has passed 2 ownerships, and lots of 'abuse'. I'm the thid owner, and still works like new.

I won't consider you a troll just by asking this question. It's normal to compare knife's brands because we want the best out there.

Since I'm on you side, send me a small regular....gotta retire mine....she's old ! :D

Strider makes great knives... SnG is strong, sexy, functional and one hardcore folder. I've handled stonewash version... tigerstripe version - great blades. So... why there is still large regular Sebenza in my pocket? It's elegant, strong, cuts like hell, doesn't scare people, fit&finish is beyond any standards. Just ROCKS. And it will stay there (in my pocket) for looong time. It's perfect.

However... I stil like striders very much... they're build like tanks - just what a battlefield knife should be

I've never been a fan of blade holes, and so I will probably never own the SNG (although Mick tells me that eventually they may offer it with thumb stud only).
I do own a Strider AR and it is, in my opinion, the strongest folder available. I use it when hiking or camping. I love it's ergonomics too. Very comfortable in the hand and you can choke up on it for fine work.
But it's very large, so not a great EDC for me.
I've owned several Sebenzas, and they are great also. My small Seb is my EDC. Perfect for just about anything you will encounter. I agree that the Sebenzas are superior to the Striders in terms of fit & finish and quality control. I've had two different AR's and they were very different in terms of how they locked up. One didn't seem to lock up as tight and had a small amount of blade play when not locked up. The other has no blade play and locks up bank vault tight. From what I've read, it is somewhat hit and miss as to what you will get. There seems to be much more variation in terms of fit & finish. But in fairness to Strider, their customer service is second to none and they will make your knife right for you, or return your money if all else fails, which usually never happens.
All in all, the Strider folders and the Sebenzas are both at the top of my list when it comes to folders. If the large Sebenza was beefed up just a bit,(thicker blade stock, etc.) I might just consider selling my AR, but until then, no way.

Truth be told, I expect my first Strider in the mail tomorrow.
It's a SnG I found on Plaza cutlery's web site.I guess I'll be making my own comparison very soon.
As per LO Little you can't be that bad knowing that your a knife nut like the rest of us. No offense taken.

I'm interested to know how the Sng works out for you. I have owned many CRK knives through the years but I have never owner a Strider. Please let us know how you like it.

If you examine the smoothness, fit and finish of both knives closely, youll see the Sebenza is clearly the more refined, better finished knife and not at the expense of strength either, however, there is something about Striders that speaks to me, i like their overbuilt, rugged good looks, as others said, if youre buying sight unseen, youre more likely to get a functionally flawless Sebenza than a Strider, however, if you do get a good Strider, it can be a VERY good knife. For example, i love the smoothness and precision of the Sebenza, but i think i would sell or trade a Sebenza before i ever got rid of my AR, because i finally found a truly perfect AR. Think of the Sebenza as a Range Rover, luxurious and refined and yet still quite capable off road, and the Strider as a Hummer 1, a relatively crude, but overbuilt, balls to the wall tank of a knife. :)

They each have their place in my heart. :)

But, what was with me today was a Strider, a one of a kind custom Titanium XL SLCC as a neck knife under my shirt, 4.75" blade, but light as a feather, sharp, wicked triple ground double edge recurve, my carry knives change with my moods i guess and today i felt like a nut... :)

Since the subject of being trollish came up early in this thread, I wonder why it has now become acceptable to post links to other maker's knives in the the CRK forum?
