SECKS and the best wife ever! (longish)

Just got back from the SECKS this afternoon. Great show. :D

Started out at A.T. Barr's table. The man says, "Don't you buy no ugly knife!" and believe me, there's no danger with A.T.'s work.

Then we did a quick tour to check out a few other makers (unfortunately, Koji Hara didn't make it to the show :() before heading back to A.T.'s table so that my wife could buy my promised birthday present (for which I've been patiently waiting four months). I decided on a beautiful piece with presentation grade black-lip Mother of Pearl scales and titanium bolsters/spacer. The liners are jeweled and file worked, the spacer is file worked, and the screws are also file worked. There's a picture of it on A.T.'s website.

A little bit later I found myself at Tom Anderson's table. Tough choice, but I ended up with a Wolfpup. Generally I prefer light, thin folders, but this knife's a hand full and I love it. Two tone black and blue G10 overlay and blue G10 pivot collars. There's a picture of the carbon fiber version here, but mine's much nicer. ;)

Then -- and this is the best part -- while I was busy elsewhere, my wife went back to Jot Singh Khalsa's table and bought me an anniversary present! :D :D :D And our anniversary isn't even until December. Mosaic damascus bolsters and blade. Abalone scales. Paua shell inserts at the pivot and in the thumb stud. Way too gorgeous to ever actually use to cut anything ;). There's a very similar knife over at W.L. Knives and Pens (the second one on the page). Guess I've got the start to my art knife collection. AND A GREAT WIFE!!!

But, we still weren't done. My wife, who carries a Buck Tool in her purse and occasionally "borrows" my old Buck Trapper decided that she wanted a knife for herself. After handling quite a few knives, both fixed and folder, and deciding that she wasn't ready for a $500 knife, she eventually choose a 605 kit knife assembled by Susan Fowler. Very nice work by Susan assembling and finishing the knife. Maybe it's not a custom, but my wife's logic was good; this is a well designed/well made knife that's comfortable in her hand and which she'll carry and use.

My wife's already talking about going to other custom shows. And with her short term memory problems, she'll forget that she bought me the Jot Singh Khalsa folder long before December.

Man you are one lucky pup!
It has taken my wife a year to quit saying
"Another knife!!!" What do you need another knife for...

My wife will neve stop saying why do you need another knife? This is usually followed somewhere by, why do they need to be so sharp -they are dangerous! :D

You are a lucky man.

Regards,

Ed

Hey, you are lucky. I saw that Khalsa when you came by Darrel Ralph's table and showed it to Dexter.

I am pretty lucky also, Jerry Hossom can attest to that. Friday night we had dinner in Winston Salem. Tom Anderson and his wife, Jerry Hossom, Darrel Ralph and his wife, several forumites, purveyors, and other makers showed up for dinner at the Diamondback Grill. We had a good time until my son Caleb started acting a little fussy. My wife told me that she was going out to the truck with him. Well, I was sitting there talking to Kelly Yates, David Baker, and Jerry Hossom and Jerry says,"did you and your wife drive separately?". I told him no and he said,"you mean she's sitting out there in the car waiting for you and you are still in here?" I told him yes. He said, "she is going to kill you!". I told them that she didn't care. They all told me how lucky I was to have a woman like that. My steak finally came and I put it in a to go box and took it out with me. When I got to the truck she told me to get my butt back in there and eat and she would wait for me. I decided not to though. It turns out that both of them didn't feel well and thats why she went out. I drove home and woke up early and headed out to the SECK show Saturday morning. I picked up a Harkins Shard, Darrel Ralph Millenium Apogee, Darrel Ralph Micro Max, Vallotton Kumite, Scholl custom, and a Carson small 4. I showed her all of them when I got home and she loved the Shard. I may have to keep it for her :D She also loved the copper flower that I picked up from the Jones Bros. Very cool!

Folks, NCBlades only packed up his steak and went to join his wife after we started taking up a collection for his wife's divorce lawyer. The woman is a saint, and they have the best behaved two year-old on earth.

It was a great evening and wonderful company. Thanks, Dexter Ewing, for putting that together and including me in it. That show always draws nice people. Maybe that's because it's hosted by some of the nicest people in our business...

As usual, I had a blast at the show. It was great catching up with some old friends and meeting some new ones. There were a bunch of forumites in attendance - David Baker, Dexter Ewing, Darrel Ralph, A.T. Barr, NCBlades, TAutry, dsvirsky, CPR, Narruc1, Terrill Hoffman, GenO Denning, Les Robertson, Steve Freund, Barry and Phillip Jones, Jerry Hossom, rockspyder, Ron Newton, Tom Anderson, Alan Folts, Andrew Mclurkin, Mike Snody, Richtrix... I know I'm leaving some out. :o

Several forumites took home show awards. Ron Newton took home three awards, and Barry and Phillip Jones won for Best Tactical Knife (I *think* that's the right category) with one of their folders. Congrats!

I fell in love with the Khalsa that Dave's wife bought for him. It's a truly stunning knife.

I didn't get any knives this year, but thanks to an outstanding deal from NCBlades I got one of my dream watches - an Omega Seamaster Pro. Thanks again, Michael. :)

Perhaps the best part of the weekend was cramming Big John Fitch and Ron Newton into the back of my Toyota for the drive to dinner on Friday night. It took John longer to unfold himself out of the car than it did to drive to the restaurant! :D

LOL! I wish I had captured that on film :D I still can't believe John got himself in the backseat!

Like everyone else I had a blast at the show and at Friday's dinner. Half of the fun of knife shows is the knives themselves. The other half is getting to meet and socialize with like minded folks. You can bet we will do it again next year! :)

Let it be known that Dave Svirsky (dsvirsky) has the best wife ;) She is very understanding of her hubby's obsession.

A hearty congrats go out to the "Twin Crunch" (aka Jones Bros :) ) for bagging the Best Fighter award, with their Scorpion tactical folder. They certainly have made great strides in the short time they have been turning out folders. The award was well deserved.

In all I came away with a Simonich/Ralph Talonite EDC, Jones Bros' Tigershark folder, and a Vanguard Talonite EDC flipper. Pics will be posted later...

The SECKS was a great time. My first custom show.

Many thanks to the Guild for putting it in, and the many makers who were so generous with their time with me at the show. I was honored to meet you.

Special thanks to David and Sabrina Demsey, Mike and Michelle Snody, Tom Anderson, and especially Jerry Hossom. You folks made the drive to W-S worthwhile.

From the crazy southpaw ER doc...;)

The whole weekend was perfect. I had the pleasure of dining with some of the nicest people on both Fri. and Sat. nights. Along with that, I spent the whole weekend either photographing or handling some of the finest examples of the knifemakers art in existance.
But with deer season just around he corner I must admit to one disappointment. Jerry Hossom took top honors in the "Hunter-Utility" class of the judging at the show. It was well deserved but when I asked to borrow it for a few months he just snickered.

Sounds like everyone else had a great time, too. Nice talking with all you guys again. Senator, awesome table you had there! Glad you managed to get the watch. Great talking with you. And with Dexter, and the Snody's. My friend picked up a damascus Snody that I'm going to have to talk him out of eventually. I managed to pick up one knife: a nice ATS-34 drop point by Jerry Hendrix with black palm handle scales. Great little knife, and very light.

Again, nice seein' all of ya again. Hope to do it again next year.

This was my first custom show also and thanks to Dexter for the info that helped getting me there and info on different blades etc.

I enjoyed the day Saturday (as did my wife and she sends a hello to all the makers wives she enjoyed talking with!) much more than the Blade Show. People took time to chat and inform me about any question I asked, which I'm sure were ?'s they'd heard 100 times. So thanks to all. :D

It was nice meeting the people behind the knives I had admired online or in the magazines and finding out they were really good people. I wish I had time to return Sunday for more but I had an ugly drive ahead of me and I did pick up a few things I'm really enjoying...

(1)Mike Snody Overlord, this knife was my reason for coming to the show to pick up and I wasn't disapointed!

(2)Darrel Ralph 4" Mad Maxx, and Darrel signed the page in Blade magazine for me since I got the knife in the actual photo, although I didn't buy the knife from his table :o !

(3)Limited Edition, DA LCC with Devin Thomas Damascus blade & carbon fiber handles.

(4)David Manley pearl handled mirror polished small boot knife with a warrencliff (sp) blade design for my wife. *Although she's playing with all the others as much as me!

(5)The one that got away... a Tom Anderson Girrafe Bone handled folder that I didn't have the money for by this time :( Even so he was more than happy to go over several topics about knives anyway!

What a good time, wish they were holding another one this weekend :D

Ooops...

I've just been informed that there was one more that got away...

The Darrel Ralph "Millennium" Damascus Apogee - #4 of 5. My wife told me it was to 'Feminine' for me to carry so I passed on a good deal for it. Well the 'Feminine' part was a hint (a big hint according to her?) for me that it should be her knife and I totally missed it while looking for myself.

If whomever picked it up wants to sell it one day and sees this please contact me and I'm sure (and re-assured ;)) she won't let me pass on it again for a similar price!

Sharon and I would like to thank all of you who helped make this one of the most "fun" shows we've ever done! :D

It's always great talkng with fellow knife nuts and finding out what kind of knives they like! :)

I hope your wife and son feel better soon, Michael!

It was Great seeing everyone at the show.
Dexter was a great host and puts on a great party (friday night) Thanks to all!

See ya next year

This was my first trip to the SECKS and I certainly hope that it will not be my last.

I picked up a Carson F4 in BG42 from Les Robertson and a Tactical Utility Neck Knife from David Dempsey.

I met several forumites: Dexter Ewing, Darrel Ralph, A.T. Barr, The Jones Brothers, NCBlades and some others.

I was highly impressed with the quality of David Dempsey's work the fit and finish was better than many higher priced makers.

No question, David's work is well worth a second look. Very nice blades and a very dedicated knifemaker.

I had a tremendous time finally going to a real knife show and getting to handle more examples of fine cutlery than I can keep in my memory. As fine as the craftsmanship was, so was the company. What a great group of people. Really enjoyed meeting you folks.

Not only did I come to look around but I also picked up my magnificent Millenium Bowie from Jerry Hossom. Jerry was as fine a gentleman in person as I thought he would be from my correspondences with him. As impressed as I was with the bowie that Jerry made me, I've got to say that his Killer-Bronc was also something to truly lust after. Words can't describe it's balance or how well it fit in your hand. Of course, the same could be said of my bowie... ;) His Narc and Stilleto are super nice pieces as well. Also, way to go Jerry for his deserved award on the hunter utility piece!

Another knife that really, really impressed me was the Darrell Ralph's Mini-Maxx. Super sweet with the spear point though I didn't see one around with the bowie blade. I was really hoping to see one, perhaps I just missed it. That's now on my wish list.

I too was impressed with Jerry Hendrix's small drop point hunter knives. I also really liked the small hunting knives made by James Shaver of Spider Ridge Forge in WV... super light and very ergonomic. Somehow, I missed the new Snody superfusion knife. :(

I know I'm leaving out so many examples of impressive craftmanship...So many fine knives, so little time... and money. Pictures never do justice to what these things look, and more importantly, feel like in person. Thanks to all of you who put this thing together and came. A special thanks to Dexter for organizing the dinner. :D

Sincerest Regards,
Nobody

TW-Knife, I got the Millenium Apogee that you are talking about. I didn't think of it as being feminine but I guess it could be. I guess it would make a great gift for my wife :D
michael

I agree NC Blades, but that's what I heard from her a couple times and took it as her talking me out of it, so I passed? Now I know why she said it! :D

I think it would make a nice gift for anyone! ;)
