Just got back from the SECKS this afternoon. Great show.
Started out at A.T. Barr's table. The man says, "Don't you buy no ugly knife!" and believe me, there's no danger with A.T.'s work.
Then we did a quick tour to check out a few other makers (unfortunately, Koji Hara didn't make it to the show
) before heading back to A.T.'s table so that my wife could buy my promised birthday present (for which I've been patiently waiting four months). I decided on a beautiful piece with presentation grade black-lip Mother of Pearl scales and titanium bolsters/spacer. The liners are jeweled and file worked, the spacer is file worked, and the screws are also file worked. There's a picture of it on A.T.'s website.
A little bit later I found myself at Tom Anderson's table. Tough choice, but I ended up with a Wolfpup. Generally I prefer light, thin folders, but this knife's a hand full and I love it. Two tone black and blue G10 overlay and blue G10 pivot collars. There's a picture of the carbon fiber version here, but mine's much nicer.
Then -- and this is the best part -- while I was busy elsewhere, my wife went back to Jot Singh Khalsa's table and bought me an anniversary present!
And our anniversary isn't even until December. Mosaic damascus bolsters and blade. Abalone scales. Paua shell inserts at the pivot and in the thumb stud. Way too gorgeous to ever actually use to cut anything
. There's a very similar knife over at W.L. Knives and Pens (the second one on the page). Guess I've got the start to my art knife collection. AND A GREAT WIFE!!!
But, we still weren't done. My wife, who carries a Buck Tool in her purse and occasionally "borrows" my old Buck Trapper decided that she wanted a knife for herself. After handling quite a few knives, both fixed and folder, and deciding that she wasn't ready for a $500 knife, she eventually choose a 605 kit knife assembled by Susan Fowler. Very nice work by Susan assembling and finishing the knife. Maybe it's not a custom, but my wife's logic was good; this is a well designed/well made knife that's comfortable in her hand and which she'll carry and use.
My wife's already talking about going to other custom shows. And with her short term memory problems, she'll forget that she bought me the Jot Singh Khalsa folder long before December.
