As a newcomer to knifemaking I am still in the process of collecting tools and such. I pretty much have a full compliment of bastard cut files of various shapes and sizes but I have no (sniffle) second-cut or smooth files of any sort. (Why don't hardware stores carry these?) I will be ordering quite a few supplies soon and had picked out a full set of second-cut files to match the bastards (those bastards!). My question is do I really need a full set of seconds or smoothies or should I just get the smallest and largest and fill in the rest over time. To start with I'd like to make knives by hand in order to get a personal feel for the creating process. (Though I must admit I've been drooling over sections in the supply catalogs where they have the Square-wheels!) Input is greatly appreciated, that list of files on my order form is really adding up!-Guy T.
