Second knife COMPLETE! ;)

So here's my second knife. I tried copying one of G.L. Drew's designs that I saw in the for sale area. I loved the design so thought I'd try it out! Imitation is the highest form of flattery I believe! ;)

So this one is made out of 1080 material. Came out of 1/8"x 1 1/2" stock and finished out at 3 1/4" blade length and 7 1/2" overall. I was trying to take my grind about halfway up but made to many goofs so I ended up taking it all the way up to the spine again. Overdid it just slightly (don't think the picture shows it) on the L side and the plunge line dipped into the spine by about a 1/64th or 1/32nd. Irritating but I'm starting to feel like I'm getting a little better at them. Soaked in boiling vinegar and then finished blade and ricasso with ultrafine ScotchBrite pad. Handle is Bubinga hand sanded to 1500 then waxed. Wished I had put some oil on it to bring out the color of the wood. Any tips there?

Any tips and comments welcome! Thanks again for everything everyone posts. Learned tons!

Clean! Good job! What is the purpose of the little step at the bottom of the ricasso? Design?

I have had a plunge line get too high what I did was grind surface away until it was back down. Then it was a thinner knife. I had to increase the bevel angle on the other side to get the cutting edge centered again. Got mad at the screwup and threw it in the junk pile. :) Next!

On another note, the links to your first knife in the respective thread are broken (person has moved or deleted...)

Nice knife and it looks familiar. I just with I could remember who I copied it from. :D. I have had other makers get upset with me if they thought that I was copying one of their knives but to be real, how can somebody claim a design on a simple knife like that.....

Looks pretty darn good, but I think the radius on the bottom corner of the ricasso should be convex and not concave. The sharp corner created could put quite a bit of wear on your fore finger with extended use.

Also IMHO, that front pin should have been moved back slightly and two more pins placed at the front. Other than those small things it seems to flow nicely, and overall looks like a very functional knife.

Now where's no. 3??? Keep up the hard work! The bevels do continue getting into muscle memory more, and the percentage of success does get better so stick with it. I have a nice bucket of failed grinding attempts, and am proud of that bucket. It shows my mistakes, but also gives me opportunity to think and NOT make those mistakes again!

Regards,
Justin

Looks good.

Not a big issue at all, but most folks just round the heel in a curve to get rid of the sharp corner. Your concave indent actually makes two corners.

Thanks everybody! :)

@ev13wt - The little step was just for design. No functional purpose I know of. I thought of sanding down the handle/ricasso area but just didn't want to take the time to do it. I don't have a great grinder setup and it would have taken me hours. I was loosing patience! ;) As far as the pic's on my other thread. If you scroll down I put the correct links in for it in a following comment.

@G L Drew - Haha... Glad you weren't offended, I don't think I'll be stealing any of your business anytime soon! :) After looking at all the knives throughout the internet, it seems like a maker can only be so unique without doing something exceptionally out of the ordinary.

@Justin - Thanks for the tip on that radius, makes sense. Will keep in mind for future projects. Knives 3 and 4 are in process and hopefully will come out even better! :)

@bladsmth - Thank you for the input as well! I'm definitely learning about the little details that make a knife more practical and user friendly... Thanks to the forum! ;)

Man, oodles better than my 2nd. Grinding great plunges just takes a lot of practice. Nice work.

I like it. I really do not think it is possible to make a completely unique knife now, and truthfully do not know that I would want to see it if it was made.
There is so many designs out there, that when making a knife you are bound to copy one aspect or another.
After all "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery"
