Second knife, tips on buffing

Hi All,

Long time reader first time poster.

I'm onto my second knife, the first and this one have both been small cheese knifes. I have a fair bit of diy experience in a work shop and with power tools, but none with a buffer.

I have a cheap set up at home, and I've just added a buffer attachment to my bench grinder. I've picked up a sewn buff to go with it.

I've read several of the horror stories on here, and I'm wondering how to use this in the safest way possible.

Specifically, has anyone tried, or does anyone have advice on mounting the blade on a more manageable sized handle?

It occurred to me that if you use the pin holes, and screw the blade into a big block of wood, you'd have something substantial to hold onto in the case of it biting, and if it did fling, I'd guess it would have a lot less speed depending on the size of the wood you use. I'm thinking like a 400mm wall stud or something? You could either have the blade extend out past the wood (think spear here), or mount it flush(not sure what would happen if the buff hit the wood but I don't like the idea of it)

Would that just be suicide? Any thoughts?

I have glasses, hearing protection, leather apron and face mask for what its worth.

i think if you screwed the knife to an easier to grasp piece of wood, you would get a more stable grip. try buffing a rectangular piece of metal with no point to learn how the buffer grabs it when you buff the edge. learn to notice when the wheel starts pulling it away from you and to let off pressure and pull back. keep your elbows pinned tightly to your ribcage to give your forearms more stability.
