I was in the zone or something tonight. Not really happy with all the tweaking I did on my first knife I intended to use a jig this evening. However I just could not get comfortable and was sure I would mess it up. So I decided to freehand it. Started out small at the edge and just methodically worked back to the tang. The ricasso just sort of grew and here it is at 120 sanded. I am super stoked. I felt so connected working on this. Just steel, my HT 1x30, a bucket of water and me. This is a gift for an employee who is going through a rough patch. I think he needs a gift from the heart. Specs-
1095 1/8" thick. Chisel grind. 3.25" blade. The the scales will stop shy of the finger groove. Intention is a neck knife but I'll set up the sheath for different carries. Your critiques and comments are greatly appreciated. Thanks for all the great information.

It looks good so far but the best part is reason why your making it. Your employee will be touched by this.

Question. He is a big motorcycle guy so I figured a neck knife would be a good option for riding a bike. I know nothing of motorcycle riding outside of some questionably legal riding in the fields around my home as a boy. Can anyone shed light on if this carry in this situation is good/ bad/ indifferent?

Maybe it's just me but I wouldn't want a blade anywhere near my neck when riding a motorcycle. I ride a lot and if I was to fall I wouldn't want a blade flying around near my neck. Belt carry or boot sounds better.

So I'm pretty happy about how this is coming out. I made paper micarta for the handle but here is my problem. When its wet, it looks great, when it dries it is more white. I don't know if it would be too slippery with a CA finish. Does anyone have any advice on CA/ other finish/ leave as is?

Have you buffed it? That will darken it. You could do a CA finish if you wanted. It makes them less grippy but it should still be plenty grippy with your handle shape.

I had not buffed it as I wanted it grippy, but you are right
I should do that and see how it looks before CA

What grit did you stop at for the handle? Take it to a higher grit like at least 600 grit and then buff.

Not too bad. Only thing I would change is to take the scales to the front of the finger notch next time. I think it would be more comfortable. Good job.
