Second XL Espada With Tough Lock

I have had many really stiff locks from CS in numerous models. The easy fix for me is to disassemble and remove about a mil. off of the blade tang at a 45 angle. You must remove it from the blade tang where it contacts with the lock spring. If you remove it from the spring side the knife will now have permanent lock rock vertically.

I have seen this on non Espada knives also(I have one now). I wonder if it is fixable under warranty.

Yes, I believe it is. I have a Luzon at the factory now for adjustment of an assisted liner lock that doesn't engage without a vigorous wrist flick. The only problem is that it will be gone for about two months. I usually just return CS knives with problems, which is why I like to purchase them from a reputable CS dealer. When you get a CS Tri-AD with a smooth working lock, you've got a wonderful knife.

Number 3 XL Espada came today with the postman. It closed smoothly on the first try. The second and third try required the edge of a table.

Numbers 1 & 2 got returned. Number 3 is going to get the "keep halfway opened treatment", and I'll just live with it and hope that it breaks in with use. Love the knife, love Cold Steel products, but I still think that a knife this sharp and this big and this expensive aught to be able to close right out of the box without a fight.

For the record, I have over a dozen Tri-Ads that work without needing to have a kitchen table edge handy.

That's good new, I'm glad that you got a good one. I just got another bad one the other day as a replacement, so that makes 3 out of 4 with impossible releases. So at least I got one keeper. Maybe it was just a bad batch, but CS should really look into the issue. You shouldn't have to fight with such a big, sharp knife to close it, especially at that price. If I didn't like the XL Espada so much, I would have given up on it a while ago.
