A question particularly for those using 1095: Do you do the secondary bevel (or part thereof) before heat treating, or is it safer to just do up to primary bevel and only start the secondary bevel when done with the heat treat?
No secondary bevel before HTing. I grind my edge to about the thickness of a dime before HT. Then grind to an edge thickness of around .010 or almost sharp. Then finish and put the final edge on.
Don are you still forge heat treating or using high temp salts? I was leaving my edges about like you do when forge treating but now with salts I am grinding much thinnner before HT. Let my qualify that however - I am using 1080 & 15N20 in damascus not using 1095

Bill, I use my forge some and also my Paragon. No salts here. I do take my edges a bit thinner than a dime, around .040" on a large blade, thinner on a small one but the temp has to be dead on.
I use the dime thickness when advising someone, because it is a safer thickness for the heat-N-quench.
