Secret Desire

I would love to take my henry .22 and a basic kit in to the woods to survive. I just don't really have a place to do it. I may have to look in to the rules for hunting small game in the local national forest. I have also been thinking about taking up fishing since everyone keeps telling me my favorite camping spot is a pretty good fishing spot.

Heck... just do it. Do it during hunting season and carrying the appropriate licenses, of course. Even it you don't kill anything, you won't starve in three days!

I even tried to chop aluminium arrows in half and modify them with screw inserts to make them portable with my take-down bow (dont really know if that qualifies them to be part of my PSK) but too scary to use.
Is that sort of like a folding axe :D

Have you ever seen what an arrow does during the moment of compression with a slow motion camera, the released bow string creates a huge amount of stress in the shaft during the arrow's moment of inertia when the bow is fired.
I really thing this could be dangerous with a bow of decent stength!!

Yeah, I didn't eat anything for the two days I was out. It was no big deal. I figured if I was in a true survival situation and staying put for a few days, I would set some snares and traps, make a bow to get some frogs or even a rabbit or squirrel. 3 days? Take a few power bars or just tough it out.

desmobob ... yes mate, something I just gotta do. Picking the location ... thinking of north tropics.
You got a duke? Mine is an old darmah

VTguy ... yea I watched a few slow motions when I was studying tillering. What about hardened joiners?

I'd give those arrows a shot (pun intended)

I think I am going to try that!

What did you do, put a tip insert in each end then epoxy an all thread in one side?

I also think it would be dangerous. There really isn't a convenient way to test such an invention other than actually trying it. You wouldn't want to end up on some kind of "Darwin Awards" web page.... :o

Even if it was safe, it would drastically change your arrows' FOC (balance point Forward Of Center) and probably destroy accuracy.

I do have a Ducati... here in the states they're "Ducks," not "Dukes" though. Mine's a 900SS SP I bought new thirteen years ago. (My avatar photo is a Yamaha I used to roadrace.) She'll be with me for life, I figure. :) Send me a photo of your Darmah!

PrimitiveMan ... yep, used a broadhead insert trimmed to fit into shaft and glued with liquid steel. other half is just a female insert. Gotta screw together and hold dead straight while curing. Join has to be smooth.
I'm using mine on a 60# recurve. Its a worry tho. I want titanium joiner or at least something harder than standard alloy inserts. I really want it to happen!

The more I think about it, the more I think it could be done safely. I'm thinking of my saltwater fly rods, some of which are four-piece. The newer ones have smooth ferrules... a section of solid graphite rod joins the hollow graphite rod sections. A carbon arrow is pretty much the same as a graphite fly rod, right? The possibility to make a jointed arrow must be there....

desmobob ... nice! <dave drewls> Mine is an SSD 900 '83 (darmah with an SS frame) had it for 21 years and bitten my fair share of tar ;)

Agreed that a take down arrow is going to loose accuracy but what if balanced? Look at the weight and balance of a bow fishing arrow?

Yea, I have a pack fly rod (oops there's my portable thing showing through again) in 5 pieces with yet another one of my kits attacked :D

I'm thinking ... takedown bow, takedown arrows, take down fly rod, take down ... pocket bike :o

I'd like to see that bike!

As for the arrow, you could re-balance it to get the correct FOC, but it would be pretty heavy by then, I'd guess. I'm also guessing you can get away with lousy balance/excess weight with bow-fishing arrows because you don't shoot them more than a few yards.

Sounds like you're a longbow guy. They are probably way more forgiving to arrows than the compounds would be. But a traditional archer probably wouldn't want to be shooting carbon arrows from a longbow (if you could find them spined right for it). Oh wait... this was all about arrows to go with your take down recurve.

Can we now post pic's on thread? I'll sort out pic's and get them on here somehow even if I gotta link to another location. Give me a day or so.

The arrows don't have to be as accurate as the newest carbon sticks.

Let's face it, humans have been killing game with a whittled stick for a long time.

A takedown 40# bow with aluminum arrows splined for 60#, cut in the center with a decent, heavy broadhead for big game and Judo point with flu-flus for small game would probably work plenty effectively.

I'll PM you so we can quit hijacking the thread.

I'll send my e-mail address so you can send the photos directly with no worry about re-sizing them, etc.

PrimitiveMan,
Could you let me know how your arrows go? Next couple of days I'm going to give my prototype a fair whack and let you know.

I dont know about you guys but here in SO CALI its not if i can or cant do it. Its more of a problem where can i do it.

Sasha

Same here in Nor Cal Sasha, that's been my issue with getting out to do something like the PSK challenge this past winter. No open fires etc.
