I guess I understand why people use "handles" on the internet. It is surely a holdover from the "CB" days. What I do not understand is why someone with one of these funny names would send somebody else an email question and not sign with their real name. Or even worse, not have the courtesy to sign the thing at all! I am sure someone here will be kind enough to explain this to me. Thanks.

Cause they wanna keep their identity a secret. something I would never do.

Edited to be more serious!!!!!

If I am dealing with someone for the first time I will always address my letter as such, " Hello Masterchef here (Mike)." I always state my forum name then use my real name from that point on.

Sometimes people will just forget to add their name to an email. When this happens to me , I email the person back and ask them to introduce themselves. I have never had a person not get back to me with their name and usually an apology for leaving it out of the first email.

Sometimes, when I e-mail someone from the forums I will sign it TheBadGuy as an effort to identify myself as someone they may be familiar with. And as Keith mentioned, I do sometimes forget to sign my name, or if I do, I might just put "Jason". Not really as a way of maintaining a secret identity as being forgetful or trying to keep it casual and friendly.

But I am SURE there are people out there that do this for less than favorable reasons.

Geeze, David I hope it wasn't me! I have to agree, if this person was e-mailing you about one of your items he saw here on B.F.'s, he probably just figured you would know him from his user name or he completely forgot that some of us don't have ESP!:D I hope what he sent you was a friendly message.:(

Thanks all for clearing this up for me. Its just that my postman told me if I send something to "Joesh*t the Rag Man" that it probably will not get delivered.:D

If you add my address under "Joe Sh*t the Rag Man", I'll se to it that Joe gets it!:D :D Or NOT!

For example: The gentleman who won my knife giveaway contest is so secret that I can not tell him he has won so he can claim his knife.
If anyone knows "littleknife" please let him know.

Not having an E-Mail listed makes no sence to me. You might try posting a LittleKnife is the winner thread or something to get his attention.

Well, if you can't locate littleknife, I'd be happy to take that knife of your hands. ;)

I'm definitely guilty of signing with only my forum name (just went back to my emails with David and sure enough--all signed "ZENGHOST").

My first reason for doing it is that I hate my real name--and my friends don't even use my real name so I try not to use it too much. My second reason is that my forum name is my identifier if I am emailing someone I've met over the forums. If I email someone with my real name, it'll mean nothing to them, but if I say this is "ZENGHOST," then at least they'll know who they're talking to. In fact, I don't like it when someone contacts me about a sale/trade and does not tell me their forum name. If someone I'm communicating/dealing with asks me my real name then I have no problem sharing it with them--especially if I want to buy something from them. I do not post my real name on the forums, though--I'm a bit paranoid about that sort of thing. My name turns up in too many web searches as it is. I sometimes even have people send stuff to "ZENGHOST" when I buy things from them.

David, I'll be sure to include my real name in our next communication. Have a good one.

I've always wondered what the real name is of that guy that uses the nick "Keith Montgomery" :D

I always use my real name...

Littleknife

:) :)

Did I do that? :o LoL :)

My handle is my last name. I should have used my first and last, but it's to late now.
