I think it would be a good idea to read up in the sword forum before watching something like that, they don't exactly put everything across clearly, and the "samurai sword" is kind of put on a pedestal.

It's good to keep in mind that leaf springs you see on trucks today are usually made from better steel than your average sword a few hundred years ago.

Just a matter of consistent manufacturing quality.

I'd swear that episode had aired before.
In any case here's the PBS page for that episode. It has some of the info from the show.
Also, check through the schedule it may air again (especially if you can receive over the air HD broadcasts, it's airing again a few times in the next few days in HD in my area.)

With any luck it'll turn up on iTunes eventually.
