Secrets of The Viking Sword, a NOVA special.

Really???? If you have seen this documentary before and don't think it is relavent, then move on, don't open the thread, or do something more productive with your time. Please don't be a a$$. We have a great community here where we can share a common interest.

I, however, have not seen or heard of this until now. Thank you, Fferrell1. I look forward to watching this.
I will enjoy learning the history of how the importance of heat treating and increased carbon was discovered.
Seeing how Chris, himself, was involved in developing S30V and S35VN, I can see how it is relevant.

You know that there is a reason why there are so many subforums on this site, right? You know what subforum you are in, right? I am fully aware of the little community here, and the dynamic that exists.

I never said it wasn't a worthwhile watch. I said that is has nothing to do with CRK. It doesn't.

As a matter of fact, it has about as much in common as CRK as ANY other forum on the entire site. If I post up a video of sharks because they are gray and reminded me of an Umnumzaan, would that be acceptable too?

If you post a video of a shark that reminds you of a Zaan, and I thought it had "NOTHING to do with CRK", then I would not read the thread or watch the video. I would simply move on to another thread. I personally don't see anything wrong with posting a video of a shark that reminds you of A Zaan. Also, I see some folks that get scorned because they post on a topic that has been discussed in the recent past. If we all only discussed topics DIRECTLY related to CRK and nothing that has been discussed in the past, then we would only have an few productive topics to discuss. We share a love for CRK and discuss many things that are not all directly related. I don't see anything wrong with that. Besides, if the mods don't think that a particular topic/thread is relative, they will move it.

I tend to agree with this. I gravitate to the CRK and Kershaw/ZT forums because they're my favorite knives. I feel like I can relate to the people in those forums better than the people in the Busse forum, for example. Just a different dynamic. I pretty much only go to these forums or the exchange, for the most part. Maybe OP felt he had a connection with this part of the forum and wanted to share something he thought was cool with the group. Maybe he was mistaken in associating the metalworking process of the Viking swords and CRK. Who cares? Actually, I think it's kind of admirable that he put himself out there after the way he was ripped a week or so ago in this sub-forum.
I guess I just get annoyed a little by the posts that seem like people are trying to play mod. I can understand if you're trying to protect a newbie from getting an infraction, or something, but I don't get the whole "search is your friend" or "how is this relevant" thing (personally, I think the search feature sucks on this site. I often search for specific topics and have to sift through pages of threads that aren't related to hopefully find what I'm looking for).
My unsolicited $0.02 (take it or leave it), if a non-trolling thread seems like a waste of time, don't choose to waste your time opening it, reading it, and then responding to it. Or heck, why not try to be helpful and point the poster in the right direction without trying to make them look like an idiot?

Not to play Mod, but we seem to be talking about our selves rather than the topic at hand.

One could argue both ways here but why bother ? The vid has nothing to do with CRK and is "off topic" but it does have two well regarded knife makers working on a rather interesting sword. :)

Does it talk about the steel? Has it been posted in the Sword forum? I could move it to General Knife. Or (we seem to be talking about ourselves rather than the topic at hand) we could go directly to Whine & Cheese.

I can't disagree with any of that
I wasn't trying to stir the pot or anything. It just seemed like the topic was reacted to as if the OP was trolling. I'm all for trolls catching a beating. But in this case I think it was just a misunderstanding.
Either way, I'll probably check out the video. If in a year I have a $10,000 collection of Viking swords I'll internet punch the OP in his eye, though.
