Secure Carry Options

Well, I'm posting a follow up thread to my lost D4. I would like to evaluate my options on securely carrying a folder as this knife is the second one lost due to being clipped to my pocket. What options are out there?

Here are the criteria:

Comfortable: every day, climate, clothing style (dressed up, work, casual, etc.), etc.

Easily accessible: fast deployment if needed

Security: I don't want it going anywhere unless it's into my hand or on my night-stand. (I'm a poet and I don't know it :D)

Versatility and Consistency: The same place every time. Whether in the woods, in the city, or at home.

Any ideas? If it's something I don't have to buy, great. If it is I'm fine with that within reason. I've been noodleing IWB with the clip on my pants between my belt. Anyone carry this way? I'll be carrying a Native that I just got in a trade.

What about clipping IWB. That is safe and secure. I carry IWB, and hide clip behind a belt loop on my pants. It IS very comfy for me to carry this way.

That's what I was thinking; it would get unclipped without me knowing for sure then! I think I'll try that out.

Hey Guys..

Feday..

Maybe not for every day carry,, but how about carrying your WD4 in a Speed Dialer and Mercharness combo ??

Also works as a neck rig

I carry my native around my neck in a similar concealex rig from river city knives. Very secure. I did not care for carrying the knife clipped in my pocket or inside the waist band because the clip would catch and because the knife to clip ratio was less I was always afraid of loosing it. I would recommend the kydex or concealex rig. I have also used 550 cord to attach it to my tac vest.

Neck sheaths work very well. Same design can also be attached to packs, webbing, and belts. Very secure, but deploys quickly.

Yes, indeed a neck sheath is a good option. I have a folder in a custom Kydex sheath, it works great.

Neck sheaths work well with small knives or relatively light folders like Spydercos.

I carried IWB on the job for years, and even with my jacket off no one noticed the knife, but it was as easy to get to as clipped to a pocket.

Never slipped, never fell out. Since the clip is under the belt, it won't snag on anything.

I still slip a Sebenza into the waistband from time to time, like for going into NYC.

I'm trying IWB right now with my mini-pika. I think it just may work; it's definatel gonna take some getting used to though. Thanks for the replies!

fedaykincmndr, I'm not being a wiseacre, but, are you telling me that the knife was clipped to the inside of your pocket and it still disappeared? Or was it clipped to the outside of your pocket?

I've carried a knife clipped to the inside of my back pocket daily for a few years now and I have never come even close to losing it. Big blades, little blades. Carried them hiking, gardening, construction, everywhere. It's always right there, easy to get to and quite secure never had an instance where I thought I couldn't get to it fast enough. Though I have to admit that I never take SD into consideration when I think about knives.

Is a neck sheath really more accessable and faster to deploy than a knife in a pocket? Honest question. I've never had occasion to try a neck sheath. Is it faster, and is it enough faster to make it worth the bother having something hanging around the neck?

A neck sheath is much slower than a pocket or inside-the-waistband carry UNLESS it's worn outside the shirt. Which generally goes over poorly in public. Under the shirt it is harder to reach for, and will swing around when you move. It's not a bad place to carry a small knife if you're wearing a buttoned shirt instead of a t-shirt, though. And if you can hang it over the shirt, say, in the woods, it's cool. It's a good place for a spare utility knife, at least as convenient as a SAK in a backpack.

Yes it was clipped to the inside of my pocket. I know it sounds strange but it happened. I've had two that've been lost like that. The IWB thing isn't working. It's poking me and horribly uncomfortable; so it looks like it's neck carry or a belt sheath. I'm probably going to go with neck carry even though it's slower it feels safer and more secure.

Hey Guys....

The first place I look when I think I've lost a folder is the seat belt on all the cars I drive....

I've had morethan one seatbelt snag a pocket clip and remove it from my pocket with me knowing about it..

Look at the base of the seatbelt, and on the floor next to the seat..
Maynot be the case if you are right handed, but the blasted seat belt has pulled tricks on me before...

I've had this happen as well. Most of my hiking is off-trail and involves quite a bit of bushwhacking. Pushing through a dense stand of scrub-oak is a good way to have anything clipped inside your pocked to be lifted out if the clip is exposed. I tend to use a sheath or deep pocket carry when I'm hiking now.

OK, I know this is almost sacriligious, but, how about taking the clip off and carrying it in your pocket?

Based on Esav's response, it sounds about as fast to access a blade in the pocket with no sheath as to access a knife in a neck sheath. Both sound plenty secure. Maybe it comes down to a comfort thing. And that's a personal choice as to what is most comfortable for you to carry. Just an idea.

The same thing happens to me. It's not so bad with a larger folder, but I always get out of my truck and realize that my sharpie is dangling from the seatbelt. Just watch out for the crunch when it gets shut in the door:eek:
