Secure Carry Options

I've had larger knives - Gen 1 Endura, Military, work their way out of the pocket when seated because the knife was long enough to get pushed up, and the clip/handle lacked sufficient entrapment to prevent it. They've hit the floor in the office, slid under car seats, etc. I solved it the first time by checking each and every time I got up, not too cool when discreet carry is needed.

The second thing was to buy a knife that will not do that - my EDC now has a cut back in the Ti frame and a long stop pin in the blade that are actually less than smooth on the draw - but I'm not a knifeslinger, so I don't need a quick draw against someone else. I just want to keep from losing it, and it is secure enough to do that. I accept the tradeoff.

I find that you are more likely to lose folders in the back pocket then the side pocket.

The first question I ask is what mission is the knife supposed to fill, dealing with people or things? Or is it supposed to do double duty?

If it is for people and you are not prohibited by law or policy, you should be carrying a fixed blade. If you are carrying a folder for SD my first choice in in the pocket against the seam of your pants. I like it there since it is below any garments to get tangled up in. If you wear a belt and depending on the folder I like the Sidewinder sheath by Phil Smith. I know Timberman has been wearing one for some time.

Since I don't carry primarily for SD, I like my folders out of the way. Tip-down & large folders especially will go in a back pocket, and many of my back pockets have flaps for extra security. (Spyderco Military, Camillus CUDA Maxx.)

An open back pocket is bad news in a crowded area (like New York City) with people ready to walk up behind you and snatch it. That's why my wallet rides in a front pocket.

Yes it was clipped to the inside of my pocket. I know it sounds strange but it happened. I've had two that've been lost like that. The IWB thing isn't working. It's poking me and horribly uncomfortable; so it looks like it's neck carry or a belt sheath. I'm probably going to go with neck carry even though it's slower it feels safer and more secure.

Before giving up on IWB carry, have you tried it in more than one position?

My Delica rides just behind my right hip bone behind the belt loop. The clip is mostly hidden under my belt. It is so comfortable in that position I often forget there is a knife there, but it comes out easily when needed. It's somewhat tricky to get it back in place, though. When in a hurry, I simply drop it into a pocket until I can get time and space to reposition it. Not a big deal, and I have never lost a knife carrying it this way. Dropped it into a toilet once, though, :barf: from forgetting I had the thing at all.

Well, I'm a little biased, while I often clip a knife to my pocket, I will also have
a knife in a sheath on my belt, which, when seated, is easier to retrieve and return.
When I had the Manix folder, the clip was very secure in the pocket, but
it also presented problems when I climbed in an out of my car, it would
catch on the steering wheel and mar the steering wheel wrap :( not nice

The Kershaw Mini-Cyclone's clip is less pronounced and doesn't have that
problem, so I'd clip that and also have a knife in a sheath as well

The clips on the William Henry knives are really suited for either shirt pocket
carry or inside a vest/coat carry, they don't seem to clip well to jean pockets.

The most secure method I've ever known for a folder was the good old fashioned belt sheath. Did you know that the Buck/Mayo 172 will fit perfectly in the sheath made for the Buck 112?

Hello. My name is Bob and I'm a chronic knife loser.

So now I EDC a knife with a lanyard hole. Tie the lanyard around my belt, slip the knife in my pocket, and never had a problem. Three years and still have the same knife - that's a record for me.

Good Luck!

OK, I know this is almost sacriligious, but, how about taking the clip off and carrying it in your pocket?

I agree. That's the right place for a pocket knife. I carry a lightweight one but i can feel it in my pocket. Anyway, i can't use a knife with a clip, for me it's like a walk with a stone in a shoe.

dantzk.

I've got to agree with knarfeng and dantzk. I've carried clipless in my RH front pocket for years and only lost a knife by not putting it back in my pocket.

And the first knife I lost was in my pocket - nice Craftsman slip joint from my mother in law, which was Case in the '70's, IIRC.

Anyway I was laying in the street hooking up the tow bar to haul a broke down car and noticed it gone 15 minutes later. Went back at the first opportunity - but, it was already gone.

Imagine my delight when Sal Glesser invented the clip! I have never . . .

no, I won't even say it. Current EDC is way to expensive.

I've temporarily lost knives clipped inside of my pockets many times in the past. Usually it was because when I sat down, the knife would bump against my thigh and just slide upward enough that the clip was not longer clipping anything. Sometimes it fell then, other times after I stood.

Now I am just careful to make sure both sides are "secure" when I sit and before I arise.

If I was really concerned about losing one, I'd use a lanyard, maybe with a monkey fist under my belt to secure it to me.
