Security Concerns?

That's not very realistic or maybe thought through. A great company can have one lousy HR person - most great companies have several... ;) Most great companies have a few jerks. That doesn't mean they're not worth working for (not to mention the things company have to do for liability reasons, whether or not they believe in it. Can you imagine the headlines? "Company X hires known knife fanatic; kills 12 co-workers with a rusted victorinox." )

Fair enough.

What about security at shows, particularly Blade:

What would prevent anyone (thieves) from scouring the tables at the opportune times, taking strategic chances to steal high profile "target" knives?

As has been announced, this sort of thing happened this past Blade, one of Ed Fowler's fighters, on Sunday.

I still have not heard of any deterrents, or measures taken to prevent this kind of thing- except just eyeballing your table.

David, when the maintenance guys were setting up for the CKCA seminar at Blade they told us the whole show floor was covered by camera. I never heard what became of Ed's stolen fighter. Does anyone know? Any arrest?

Ed told us the other night that the police pretty much know who did it, but can't prove it. It was allegedly and man and a women, one of whom is an attorney. Thats all he would say. He figures that the knife is either squirreled away somewhere or at the bottom of Lake Lanier by now.

I don't think the police does anything really for a small theft like that. They add it on their watch list, but I don't think they DO anything for anything worth less than tens of thousands. Even for car or motorbike (the non-exceptional kind) theft, my impression is they don't do real inquiries anymore. The government budgets are just stretched too widely nowadays.

Nowadays, it is the same all over the world as fighting terrorism is the
main issue everywhere not small theft and the likes...... Here in Israel
this is even more a matter of fact unwritten policy....

All the best,

• How big a risk do you consider sharing photos of your knives via web/photo sites?

Not something that has ever entered my mind.

• How about the risk of taking your knives to shows to share with fellow enthusiast and/or to be photographed?

Wouldn't do it. I just don't have enough trust in airport terminal workers.

• Makers, I assume you have security concerns as well in transporting, storing knives at home and at shows and advertising your knives on the internet?

• How do you feel about displaying your knives in your homes as opposed to being locked away in a safe or even in a bank safety deposit box?

Never have locked my knives away, but I don't display them either. They are kept in an unlocked cabinet and brought out regularly to be fondled and cared for.

• Even though insured, (by the way, the CKCA has a discount program for members with CIS/formally CIA) how concerned are you in shipping your knives in that many are one of a kinds that in most cases can’t easily be replaced?

Shipping my knives always has me quite concerned until they are home. However, I don't lose any sleep over it.

• I do feel one thing the custom knife community has going for it is the fact that we are a close-nit community so stolen knives are hard to re-sell. Agree?

There are so many knife collectors that are out of our circles that I think there is probably a market for stolen knives. The knife will likely not even be sold to a collector, just someone that wants a cool knife. The thief may only get ten cents on the dollar of what the knife is worth, or less, but they probably don't care.

• The CKCA doesn’t allow “screen names” (except for extreme and very limited circumstances), on our forum. How do you feel about that?

I feel it makes people more accountable for the things they post. It's too easy to hide behind a screen name.

As always, thank you in advance for your opinions, views and participation.

Security isn't something I think of a great deal. Maybe I have become too complacent.
