Well my work laptop picked up this wormy thing called Security Tool
it keeps interrupting any programs you try to run, claiming you are
at risk and someone is attempting to steal your credit card information...
I had to drop it off to work today, will have limited access to both
my email and the forums for a while :( not sure why people get their
kicks over making this stuff?

they dont have anything better to do. what antivirus program do they have on your laptop? i dont think its working too well.

Norton system from the company, will find out on Monday what can be done...

i suggest they get rid of norton and get another program. along with being useless, norton is a big memory hog and failed me bad many years ago. i have norton systemworks and its update is good to the year 2023 which i'll never use.

Security Tool is a rogue antispyware program. It's actually kind of nasty. See if you can remove it from the control panel/ add and remove programs. If that doesn't work, try downloading Spyware Doctor. It's free to try. You might try Malwarebites and see what it finds. It's also free.

Norton is terrible. I have had serious problems twice that Norton did not catch. There is malware that actually disables Norton, McAfee and some of the other major antivirus programs. Since I started using PC Tools Spyware Doctor, I have had no problems.

On occasion, I get a message that my computer may have been attacked and some sort of rogue anitvirus program starts downloading. You can't stop it, so I just hit the power button.

a better antivirus and firewall would help. i'm using avast antivirus and comodo firewall. a buddy downloaded spyware doctor and it caused all kinds of problems. it wouldnt uninstall and a pop up box came up every few minutes wanting you to upgrade. it took me many hours to get rid of it. i use cureit by dr web which has fixed problems for a few members.

ditch the security vulnerable microsoft and get a LINUX based computer!

Why do people insist on making this statement? Did you not read that it's a company computer? He really doesn't have a choice in the matter.

Geez, people. Wake up and read before you post.

Norton was the shiznit once upon a time, but that time is long past. Comodo and AVG are the way to go currently.

This one got my laptop also. Took it in to BestBuy to get it removed. Should get it back in a day or so. Just picked up WebRoot and am going to put that on my desktop today.

That "security tool" thing killed my main work computer. I had to wipe the drive and reinstall the OS, it was so bad. I was running the full version of Norton at the time, fully updated. Whoever writes viruses deserves to burn in one of the lower pits of hell. Make sure you have all of your important data backed up, with a backup of your backup!

i would remove norton and install kaspersky or avg.

Yeah I agree with this. If at all possible get a different antivirus. I have been running the free version of avg for about five years now and have not had any problems at all. I just make sure that I keep it up dated.
I would also try the malwarebytes program that someone earlier mentioned. I use that on my work computer along with another program called spybot. It will often pick up things that malwarebytes won't.

I use Deep Freeze, no problems for more than a year now. Knock on wood.

Before that, viruses simply ate up my computer.

We've used Avast! for 3+ years now, and so far it's caught everything that's tried to attack our computer. I installed it on a recommendation from a neighbor who is an IT guy, and runs three computers out of his home, two for his company. It's caught things Norton and Spysweeper missed repeatedly.

thx - cpr

Norton sucks. went through a period getting trojans that were embedding deep, Norton didn't detect it and the removal tool was a waste of (a lot of) time and energy. Starting using Webroot products and it has stopped everything from even entering.

While it used to be lone hackers cranking this stuff out in their basements, its much much worse now. You now have gangs and other large criminal organizations setting these things up, trying to steal passwords and financial info from your computer, or scamming you into buying fake removal software.

Avast is good, and so is AVG. Quite often one program will not catch everything, so a combination is good. I have AVG and Spybot search/destroy along with Zonealarm on my computers.

I've had a similar issue, finally I found an add-on ( responsible for the redirecting )in IE ( Tools->Manage Add-ons ) and disabled it; than remove the "program" from the Start Up.
