You all are likely sick and tired of anvils question, so I apologize, but I am going ask one anyway. I narrow down to 2 anvils that are within my budget.

(1) Dilton Emerson 150lbs anvils from either Texas knife supply or Uncle Al. ( http://www.texasknife.com/vcom/product_info.php?cPath=659_221_853&products_id=2108 )

(2) Titan model 120lbs anvil from Nimba. ( http://www.nimbaanvils.com/titan.php )

The Titan is lighter but more expensive, $100 more. However from appearance, it seems that most of the mass of the Titan is at the center of the anvil. I am a wuss, so I won't be using any hammer heavier than 3 lbs, most likely 2.5 lbs. Your opinion please.

One last question. Should I get the anvil stand like this one ( http://www.texasknife.com/vcom/product_info.php?cPath=659_221_853&products_id=2110 ), or should I build one out of 4x4 lumber?

The Nimba is a really good anvil. Make a solid wooden base, and forget about those tubular portable stands.

I would suggest getting a old anvil if your new at forging. But if I were to pick one to use myself I like the Nimba a lot better looks like it would transfer energy a lot better.

You can save a bunch of money by looking on craigslist. I saw a few decent ones in the last week in your area. If your new to this it wont hurt so bad when you put a ding in your anvil if it's older compared to a new one:D.

I have a 100 lbs. Emerson that I use everyday. I'm very happy with it. The nimba looks like it would be solid and quiet, the only thing i see with it is that there isn't much clearance under the horn. That wouldnt be a problem bladesmithing, but if you tried to turn rings, circles, horseshoes, or the like, that might be a pain. If you go with the Emerson, check out Well-Shod.com.
Anvil Brand has a nice 120 lbs that is a lot of bang for the buck. I know several guys that have them with out any complaints. I think you can get one shipped for $550 or something like that the last time I looked.

All that being said, old anvils are better a lot of times, and you can find them eBay or craigslist.

Good luck

Cody

I bought a 300 pound Fisher a while back; paid 550 for it. As the weight goes up in an anvil they perform differently. If your not in a big hurry look around a bit.

I understand wanting one today also.

I don't necessary want one today, but soon. I started bladesmithing class every Saturday for the next three weeks. Afterward, I want an tools and equipment to practice with. I already have a Atlas mini-forge, just need an anvil and a grinder.
