well if you want a exceptional companion and a AMAZING hunting and off leash dog. Then id go with a lab. In particular a silver lab. my son got one before he went to Iraq. He is 5 months old and weighs 60 pounds already. Huge paws and a awesome dog. he was potty trained in no time and loves being around whoever takes care of him. But he doesnt get in the way. He is also really protective of our family but is people and child friendly. He loves to swim and fetch.
You can check out his parents and siblings at

Here is some pictures of him.

also our GSD (german shephard is from Germany and was trained in Schutzhund which is a extremly more complex form of the swat and police dogs. Its what the Germans use for there military and let me tell you. it is really weird to watch her do the things she can do. and best of all she only responds to the person who knows the commands. which are in german. but she also is a great dog for the family and will do the usual sit/stay rollover stuff when they ask her. trust me when you get into the GSDs or the closer relatives to the wolfs you are asking them to do things not telling. Anyways my wife is a vet and we have seen our fair share of muttes and pure breeds. It all comes down to what you want and what you are comfortable with. But if you have young kids or elderly in you house be careful with the dobermans and ridgebacks. they can be rough just playing around and when they get wound up its hard to stop them.
But it is your dog so have fun picking him/her

Before pitbulls were demonized in the media they were at 1 time the most commonly found working dog in America, They are extremely loyal IMO more so than any other breed, have been breed to not be human aggressive (if they bit a handler they would be put down), are great w/ kids, and protective. I have 2 a male 7 and female 4 had the boy since 9 weeks old and could not ask for a better dog comes when I call even while chasing a deer and is a 75lb clown. the girl was rescued at 2 years of age and is great but wasn't trained she's alot better listening to commands now but nowhere near as good as my boy. I would get a puppy if we were to ever rescue a dog again. in general they all have short hair that like every other breed still sheds though not as bad, they tend to be muscle bound clowns, and need lots of exercise. there a a number of places to rescue them so not that money is an issue but a great dog for practicaly free does not hurt. police and millitary have used them for everything from search and rescue to bomb/drug sniffing dogs with great results. I can not say enough great things about theese dogs. a few fun facts an APBT (american pit bull terrier) won the national frisbee catch championship, were the on american pride posters during WW2, Petey the dog on little rascals tv show was an APBT, APBT's can pull more weight than any other dog pound for pound, are constantly obedience training champions, and as you can proabably tell by now my favorite breed!
Best of luck with whatever dog you get just remember you get out of them what you put into them kinda of like kids (ha,ha!)
